I was so disappointed that there wasn't a chess-themed steel type gym, set in a castle, for Kalos. It was truly a missed opportunity.

If you make Bisharp Rookie, that makes no sense, because he's supposed to be the master to the pawniard that the pawniard evolves into. But if you make Pawniard "Rookie", then that kills the evolution joke and even the chess joke because Rooks are usually more valuable pieces than Bishops.

Their Japanese names were puns on shogi pieces, not chess chess, and they're visually based off of neither and more akin to just tokusatsu villains.
