Death Note keeps with a very realistic style, so of course characterdesigns aren't very unique, besides the Shinigamis.
Comparing a medium that usually keeps to a reasonably normal display of humans to simpsons seems a little weird to me anyway. Anime would hardly bring forth such an abstract style.
Also, Simpsons has the most basic personalitys you see in comedies, where basically every character is a walking stereotype.
And still, it's funny on occasion, which also proofs that stuff doesn't have to be original to be good.
Anime is as diverse as western cartoons are. But since theres more anime than cartoons, stuff may seem like theres far too much shows that are the same.
