The music that you guys are writing isn't cohesive, it doesn't feel like music. There's no flow to the compositions, it feels stagnant. If need be I will help contribute to this project simply because I don't want you guys to have dissonant and atonal music. No offense on the actual composers themselves, but they need to put some work in before any of this music could possibly be called final.

It's just because there are no design changes. Now you have four spikes of the same colour instead of two; added a couple more curves and spikes to the face. That's about the extent of the changes.

It might be that the second stage needs some changing, but to be honest that design isn't what I quite imagine when I look at the first stage. I see something Tyrannosaurus-like, or something really round and bulky, like an Ankylosaurus (which actually keeps to the spiky theme better while still adding some more inspiration).

The just gets bigger thing is probably the best I can draw. I can redraw if someone gets a good design out that matches the previous two but otherwise my own skills just aren't up to par.

If there are any other drawfags, I think what would be neat is to have a final evolution with a welder style to it, like a helmet it can pull down over its face. Going for more of a Feraligatr design might be better as well.

While the idea does seem appealing, card, there are a few things I'd like to bring up:
First, We've voted for the Thorndle line to be fire ground, unless that was changed in my brief absence.
Second, it seems to lack one defining trait of the thorny devil, being the false head on the back of the neck.
While being purely opinion, I feel as if the lower jaw seems a tad lacking, and a bit more neandrethalic than the lazy looking lizard that was the previous two stages.
Beyond that, it looks kinda like a bizarre cross of Charizard and Tyranitar, but that feeling is likely to change once I see this design in color.

I see a lot of potential in this design, though. It definitely gets the bulky feel people have been wanting across, but it also feels as if it's scrapping some of the major design ideas.

I do look forward to what this could become, though.

Bulbasaur, despite its english name, is a frog/toad with a flower on its back, Squirtle and Wartortile's designs are based off some weird-ass Japanese/Chinese (I actually forget which) myth where a turtle that lives long enough grows ears and shit out of algae, and becomes able to speak because of which.

I actually support different ideas and the like- and in fact, I supported the idea of Thorndle being Fire/Poison and slowly growing glass armor as it evolves- But Thorndle being a Thorny Devil has been there for quite a while.

Seriously stop bringing up how much you like fire/poison. It doesn't make sense and it's not going to happen. Unique typing is NOT a reason to use it. It can be used on another pokemon, like a proper scorpion or just about anything. Thorny devils are not poisonous and we are not shoehorning it in just so you can have a unique typing.

Now this is neat, though I'd probably say the back is a little too busy and it should have a couple prominent spikes on the tail. Maybe the jaw could be a little more "bearded" as well? Otherwise, it's neat. With the spines coloured in the same way as the middle evo, it'll look like a barbeque. But I like that.

Right, what have I missed? Couldn't really go online yesterday, my laptop's screen got completely and utterly fucked so I'm using a different screen via VGA connector.

I made some sprites for Thorndle and its evo. Pic related. Comparisons to the other fire starters and New York's Sprites. I made my sprites look more like they're facing opponents (similar to the other starters). Color variations on the side.

It looks adorable! But the lower half looks slightly plain.

My only major concern for the starters is that the typings will become the same as gen /vp/. With the current ideas it looks like fire/rock (hopefully fire/ground instead) and grass/flying starters. I'm worried that people from gen /vp/ will come over and accuse us of copying ideas...

Final evo changes are nothing new. Did you expect Wartortle to sprout cannons? Did you expect Charmeleon to grow wings? Did you expect Grovyle to lose the arm feathers and grow a fern tail? Did you expect Snivy to turn into an armless, legless snake? Did you expect Tepig to go bipedal? Did you expect Dewott to go on all fours and grow a shell helmet? Did you expect Frogadier to use its tongue as a scarf?

Changes can be very cool, and add to the wow factor of a pokemon. If you want every stage to look the same, you'll end up with a pokedex full of it-gets-bigger pokemon.

Should clarify: When I said "it looks badass" about the 3rd stage, I meant OP's pic. But looking over the thread again, I agree with >>16397406's sentiment that >>16386372 is the best 3rd Stage so far. Still, it needs to be differentiated from the 2nd Stage just a little bit so that it can't be said to be just "getting bigger". Maybe return to the orange colouration of the 1st stage (kind of like how Charmander -> Charmeleon -> Charizard goes orange -> red -> orange).

Um... I don't think so? I don't really like saying stuff such as "you're wrong because I said so", so I ran a test(?). I decided to box the area, of which a Pokemon takes up (the furthest out pixel being on the outline) and then filled them in. Before anyone asks why Pyroat is there, it's because I really love its sprite, it fits in so well! (Fair use btw) I compared all of them together. So what did I conclude (apart from a bunch of colored boxes)?
-Combusken is the tallest canon sprite
-Monferno's sprite is surprisingly short

Well the "black" I used was the dark gray/brown that was already used on the underside of >>16386372

I don't think it should be a new colour added into the mix or if anything just a more "mature" version of the juvenile's colours like with blaziken getting crimson instead of orange and cream instead of yellow.

Misread what I wrote. You fit within the height and weight. Your area is too big. He physically fills in too much of the box by about 300 pixels over Pignite, and considering he's not a Pig, you'd think he'd be a bit smaller. 700 pixels over the next canon sprite.

Although Foxy's fits within the height and width parameters, it fills in too much of the box. Take a look here. They only slightly go into the next size up (Monferno and Charmeleon barely even scraping it), but they also don't fill in nearly as much of the boxes total area.

Foxy's sprite looks great (there are some things about it I'd adjust), but because of how much space it takes up it looks huge.

So, here's a really rough layout of Darwin-Palmerston. Note that coastlines, trees, pathways, etc are not properly finished, and no ornamental fillers have been added yet.

I was thinking of making it much more low-density than any of the other big cities so far, since it doesn't have as much interesting stuff.

I've also decided to give it a port with some kind of event-related boat, because although Sydney Harbour is bigger, Darwin Harbour is much less obstructed in terms of the game maps.

What do you guys think?

Look at GF's starters; are they all one species or genus of an animal? No. It's an unspecified lizard, or frog, or crocodile. A big mistake is having it only inspired on one thing and one thing only.

Ha! It still looks better with size reduction. Just admit it, they're better at spriting than you. The proportions on yours are wonky on the legs - they need to be bulkier to support its body. The leg on the left looks really off, the joint being very small. the neck looks off and should be slightly slanted, not completely straight. The tail is much too long, it's higher than its head.

Different anon here, I'm going to have to disagree with you, mostly because I don't see how the linework is poor, you just said what you thought wad with no reasoning. I examined the two to see which looked better and I'm going to say I'd rather have Foxy's to look at in the pokedex, stat screen and as an opponent. For the following, pic related.

In pic related, I've boxed what I dislike in pink and what I prefer in green.

1. I prefer New York's head horns. Foxy's ones look like they're facing the wrong way. They need more curve too.

2. I don't really like eithers face points. New York's looks like cat ears while Foxy's are far too pointy (it makes the head look like a pentagram).

3.Foxy's eye looks better as it has been shaded in with nice colors as opposed to being left bland

4. New York's neck is really straight and just doesn't look right. Foxy's neck curves into the body nicely. I can't think of one Pokemon that simply has a straight neck.

5.The back spikes are meh on both. The not-as-visible spikes on Foxy's have bad linework - they appear really slanted unlike the fore ones, I much prefer the old sprite's back spikes. New York's back spikes have the right idea of being curved but are too far apart.

6.The left leg on New York's has bad linework, it doesn't look at all structured.

7. The body looks bulky and structured (the only thing really similar to the original artwork) on Foxy's while New York's has a very banana shaped one, again, like with the neck, it looks off.

The tails of both look fine in accordance to each sprite imo. As for colors, I prefer Foxy's sandy colors, they feel much more like they'd belong on a Pokemon based on a desert lizard.

Comparing the two sprites, to me, New York's sprite style fits the Gen 3 games style while Foxy's fit the Gen 5 games style. New York likes to closely follow the original artwork's colors and shape most of the time while Foxy's seem like improvisations.

How about the theme of a deserty route or town, like pic related? Think acoustic guitars with a didgeridoo and/or clapstick backing.

You can do a fast-tempo approach, like the Gerudo Valley theme, or you can use slow-paced twangs. Just, whatever you do, please don't make it sound super-cheery and upbeat.

I love it. It has the same cool, relaxed feeling Treeko has as opposed to the cute vibe you get from most starters which is nice.

I feel like gen 4 got it right with the lead up - first, the logo and presenters, then displaying some areas, then some main characters, then the starters and then it goes to the main legendary/something else of value. As for the part of the introduction where it displays the legendary, r/s/e and b/w had it the best in terms of individuality when it came to the main Pokemon theme. The theme should carry the feeling of adventure, exploration and suspense. I like the idea of "how a place like Australia lends itself to many an emotion."

I really do like this design quite a bit, it feels kinda like it has a panther look going for it with the coloration.

This was pretty much set in stone, so I'm going to post what we have here. We can develop her further and work on more artwork if we want.

Professor Raine Acacia is a world-renown Pokemon researcher and naturalist. She researches Pokemon in relation to the dreamtime and their connection to the dream stone, as well as their habitats. She is the widow of the regions previous lead Professor, Irwin Acacia. Although she has a lab within the region, she is often out in the region researching Pokemon herself. After initially meeting her in her lab, the player runs into her occasionally throughout the course of the story as one of their friendly rivals. She will teach you about certain Pokemon and certain areas when you run into her, and then battle you to test your growth.

Inspiration: The inspiration for this character is Terri Irwin, widow of Australian icon Steve Irwin. Her name comes from her maiden name, Terri Raines. The last name Acacia comes from the native Australian tree, the Acacia. Since Pokemon has a pattern of naming Professors for trees, we went with Raine Acacia.

Throughout the story when you run into her, she has some signature Pokemon with her that grow stronger, like a some sort of rival.

However, when you get to the E4, she reveals herself to be the Champion of the region in memory of her late husband. Two of her signature Pokemon remain, but the rest she explains were his team, Pokemon he raised. With this in mind, you're not only battling her, but memory of the legendary Irwin Acacia (Steve Irwin).

I'm spriting designs so I can get good at it - I'm still a beginner. Spriting is also good to see if a design works. (plus the beard-thing looks great in a silly kind of way, and partially mixes with the Bearded dragon, another Aussie desert lizard)
The cyndaquil-like back fire also reminds me of thorns.

I came up with an idea for the Grass starter that I've been trying to draw just right, but I just can't seem to get it.

It would start off as a bushbaby, who wraps a blanket of leaves around himself to camouflage himself. Think Swadloon-like. It would be really cute, look a little sleepy, stuff like that.

Then, I'm not sure about the second form, but the idea for the third stage is that the blanket of leaves has become a cape he has tied around his neck. Instead of being a conventional flying squirrel Pokemon, it would be some sort of superhero Pokemon that would be grass/flying or grass/fighting. He would be a fast mixed attacker.

Thoughts?

Unfortunately, that third evo is linked to its first stage, and wouldn't mix well with Thorndle's current head design. I'd love it to pieces if it could mesh both Thorndle's design and headshape into the power behind that third evo.

Good going anon, you scared everyone off. On another note, I guess I'm into this project and I'm in support of the Thorndle and evo designs in (pic related). It's basically the (original) Thorndle as seen in >>16386372 with >>16402473 's two evolutions. Of course, the second two evolutions will need tweaking but they look much more 'Pokemon' than some of the over designed messes from before.

Now,now, we don't want something looking over designed. It's got enough spikes as is imo. 6 on the tail, 4 on the legs (one on each leg), 2 on the false head and (not sure if this counts) 2 on the head around the eyes. Looking at other Pokemon with spikes (pic related), it seems pretty fine (in relation to having spikes)
