There are a lot of reasons to do this, though with something akin to the memory link function it *may* be possible to face off against the PC from previous games (namely X and Y) using a random team you entered the hall of fame with...though i imagine they'd need to shenanigan something to avoid people facing a team consisting of 5 magikarp and a feebas.
Just an idea, though...I doubt they'll do that cuz that's a LOT of work for a single optional fight. If they include a match against the X/Y protagonist in future games, the team will probably be the 3 kalos starters, one of the kanto starters, lucario, and lapras; or 2 kalos starters, 1 Kanto starter, Snorlax, Lucario, and Lapras. Maybe replace one with the X/Y legendary...
