In other news, made some alterations to the Alice Springs map. Threw in some more green in accordance with an anon's suggestion that Alice Springs isn't a total dustbowl.

quickly redid the second form of the seaweed/beercan fish
i much prefer this also the tail is meant to be a bottle opener of sorts, can be changed but i thought it was a nice call back

Why not both?
The shark was super cool, IMO.
And the whale is definitely cool in its own right.
If we really wanted to, it could be a three stage evolutionary family, where the shark eventually gorges itself on so much junk it balloons into the whale there.
Heck, the stats could do a complete turnaround where shark could be a speedy, frail physical attacker, and the whale could be a bulky, slow, special attacker.

I was asleep, but someone posted pic related in the previous thread and on the forums for a possible Water or Grass starter and they basically did exactly what I was hoping for, so I may push a little for this thing to be implemented. Here's his post from the forums:
"Designs are based on Corroboree frog, Turtle frog and Gastric Brooding frog/Marsupial frog. I tried to influence the markings a little on both the Corroboree frog's markings and aboriginal body art. An anon suggested incorporating the legend of Tiddalik the frog as well."

I don't know, something like a little hanging gardens/desert oasis type of thing. A river running past it, and little gardens and springs sprawled about, and in the very middle, I don't know, a town hall or statue or fountain or pool or something.

Make it really obvious that it's a more like a tropical retreat cultivated in the badlands.

i recolored it on the forums to fit water starter, since thats ultimately what i hope it ends up. the babies in the mouth are a bit much in my opinion.

I love the entire concept I just wish the evolution would be a little more reminiscent of the first stage. Maybe pull a weezing where the other heads are still visible on the sides or something... or maybe a mega-zord type deal where each fish controls a different limb/fin.

Ah. I see the angle you're playing at.

Still, I do like to take direct inspiration from the real world location for these maps, and Alice Springs just doesn't have any rivers running through it (or even near it, for that matter - the closest one is the Finke River, and that's quite a bit away).

However, I think I might have a way to incorporate your idea into a desert town.

Recently, Uluru was drenched in rainwater, and for a few hours, it was home to some magnificent waterfalls. Why not have a small town at the foot of Uluru (Pokemon equivalent of the town of Mutitjulu?), and have Uluru be in waterfall mode near-permanently?

Ah. I didn't catch that river in the satellite images I was referencing. It looked like a dried-up riverbed or a trench more than anything.

This is just the rough first draft, so it's probably going to change a LOT. I know theres not much difference between stages, and I'll rectify that a bit later- draw the middle stage clearer, or push it out altogether and have the first stage as the middle, and a tadpole/frog egg as the first.

Pretty sure we're covering parts of that in the Rainbow snake inspired poke (which in turn was inspired by the massive snakes that lived around that time) and the Drop-bear poke (which is thought to have been based on giant predatory marsupials which used ambush strategies to hunt...such as dropping out of trees onto prey)

like i said on the forums, every starter follows a pretty vibrant color scheme. i actually took the color for the first grass version directly from sceptile and meganium. the second i changed it saturation and lightness to make it its own thing. but browns and earthy colors dont have the vibrancy of starters.

I don't know if this has been brought up yet, but I feel that since X and Y were based on France and included 3 regions, and real life France is only 547,030 Km squared, where as Australia is 7,686,850 Km squared, you would have to make this game include about 42 regions.
Remember also that Kanto, Johto, and even Unova, are all based on very tiny areas.
Kanto is a small area of Japan, same with Johto, and Unova is New York and close surrounding areas.

All of Australia is much too big to make it into just one region; Unless you intend to make this game giant, just make it based on a small area.

It's been brought up, but most of us disagree with the idea. We've shrunk the region so that we could maintain diversity. Also the fact that we probably won't make a generation 2.

Compare Australia to the United States. Unova is one region based on the USA.

While I do agree that we shouldn't make Australia uberheug, it should be noted that while Unova may take inspiration from all of America, the shape of the map is based off of New York and New Jersey.

Eh. Now that I think about it I can see how it's based on New York as a whole.

I've done one route, the Great Barrier Reef route (a sea route) which goes between Cairns (which I haven't done yet) and the Torres Strait Islands. My plan was to do the cities first, then make the routes the right lengths so that everything lined up perfectly.

Okay! I've saved all of the different colours for the frogs. I tried a darker water-type colouring for the 3rd evolution. ALSO, drew a possible new 1st stage evolution? Quite a few anons have mentioned the lack of variation between evolutions so the tadpole may help in that regard. Someone suggested arms instead of legs, so I did a bit of both- developed arms and still-developing legs. I tried to make it cute instead of creepy but idk if I hit that right.
I used the colous suggested >>16439391
but changed the black since it seemed a little dark? If everyone prefers the black I'm happy to change.

If I replaced the first stage with the tadpole, I was thinking either bump current first into second stage place, or bump first out completly. Your choice.

ALSO THIS DOES NOT HAVE TO BE THE STARTER, it was just a suggestion as there doesn't seem to be a starter picked yet! Tbh I'd be fine just using stage 1 & 3 as a water or ground type somewhere.

Just imagine five of the six fish on the prevo to evolve into whatever the evo looks like I like how yours looks like and the sixth being still the same, but still a part of the evo (tangled in the seaweed or even just swimming near it like those fish that get left alone by bigger fish because they eat away harmful stuff on their skin.

So maybe while the Big fish is Water/Poison the 6th fish that goes separate lacks poison and maybe gets more fish/seaweed-like becoming pure water or even Water/Grass as if it was purified by the process or something... I like the idea a lot, Sketch, but the problem is that the mon was based off the Dragon Blood Tree, which the original design had on its back.
Again, I really like the idea for a grass/dragon mon, and I most certainly love your design, but it loses the original concept.
The original concept unfortunately not being able to look like much except a lizard with a tree on its back, much like Torterra.

Thorndle is pretty much the only one out of those three that was accepted as of right now.

Second, I'd like to know what kind of cow could be fire type and still look like a cow, without making any kind of burger jokes.
Third, Thorndle is based off a desert-bound lizard called the thorny devil. Not every small lizard needs to end up a dragon, especially not something like Thorndle.
Fourth, Thornlde in the starter spot does not necessarily mean that it's Gimped.
Hell, a rather large number of the starters have always been competitively useful. especially my home dog Swampert.

Fire is one of those weird types that doesn't naturally appear in nature. The cow idea was linked to outback vehicles (motorbike, dune buggy, jeep) so you could argue that the fire element comes from the combustion.

No, of course not. But I like the design a lot. I know what a Thorny Lizard is but there's no reason not to run with the concept and have it gain the Dragon type at a later evo. I've seen it proposed as a possible pseudo.

Surveying is important because ,from experience, the opinions in-thread at one instance could really, really vary wildly from what the overall group thinks of it.

Basically what everyone is spouting is head cannon at the moment. Nothing can be taken as 100% true. So while you can defend, I wouldn't shoot down.

The fact that Fennekin isn't part of that pattern should say something to you. It's the latest starter; If they were following a pattern, fennekin wouldn't have been a fox. It's not "an odd ball out". And unless Gamefreak comes out and SAYS "All fire starters will be zodiac animals" then it's just a theory. A theory based on the assumption that it's a pattern.
And while I'm not opposed to new ideas, I think making a fire cow would be fairly difficult, since cows are generally seen as bulky/fat, and another round fire starter might look too similar to emboar. I'm not saying bulky cow is the only possible design, but I personally cannot think of anything other than that.
So until another well received motercow or whatever fire starter comes along, we're hanging onto Thorndle.

Aquatic life spans beyond fish, we only need two or so in total. Theres coral, urchins, nudibranchs etc. to consider, not just more lumineons.

The only reason this isn't totally balances is the second type in reverse doesn't match up, but there is really only so much we can do. And yes, considering how many fish-based pokemon there were in generation one and how much more fish-life there is compared to other animals, it's pretty necessary. Furthermore, to use one as a starter makes it so that we have more than we need, because we'll have to compensate in the water routes. Instead of coming up with more fish, we can put lamoby in the water routes as one of the slots. He fits better there. Fucking get over it.

Grass/Steel is doubly weak to fire, water/ground is doubly weak to grass. The only issue is fire/rock, which is doubly weak to both water and ground. We could always give it an ability like vaporize that would render water neutral, or even no damage.

As well, they don't have to be perfect. We can also play around with stats, and anyway, there is usually a best starter. See gen four for the types not being perfect, gen 2 for the difficulty difference.

Wouldn't be difficult to implement at all, and the fact that another starter has a turtle shell means fuck all. Technically two have shells, if you want to include Chespin. Considering it would be a totally different design to turtwig (it's a frog, not a turtle), it could work.

Still a huge fan of the split evo though. Remember the fish -> serpent design with the upside-down dead fish? If we don't go for skeletal or angler, I think that one would be really nice.

Guys... The Grass Starter should be Grass/Bug. I know it has been done before, and it isn't the best typing, but...
Water STAB moves from the proposed water starter do 4x damage to Thorndle's line.

Grass moves do 4x to our proposed water starter's typing, and that means our grass type should be 4x weak to fire.

If we use Grass/Bug, we get a cool reverse triangle, Thorndle's Ground STAB moves do 2x damage on the Water/Rock type, the Water starter's Rock type STABS do 2x on the Grass/Bug type, and although Bug type is ineffective on Fire/Ground, Grass hits it for neutral damage and Grass/Bug doubly resists Ground.

And there's lots of insects in Australia we can base it off of too, it could be really cool,

With some adjustments, this could work. Markings can be turned into rivets and bolts. We could throw the steel shell on it and have it's moss growing on the shell or through the shell.

It definitely is an awful type combination, I totally agree, but giving it a good movepool would certainly help. I feel like both Grass/Ice and Grass/Bug will be weak, though, and Grass/Steel will be extremely strong.

Seems you are the only one. The idea of taking certain creatures names and translating them literally is always a good way to come up with Pokemon. For example, "Elegant Firefish" could be a fish engulfed in flames. "Elephant Sealion" could be a sealion with an elephant trunk or legs. Turtle-frog? A frog with a turtleshell.

Still, we could differentiate it through increased bulk, and maybe the beginnings of some kind of rocky armour, and fins on places other than its tail? It looks like that Tumblr buffalo is heading more towards a muddy ground typing too, rather than a rock type.

The color scheme determines whether or not it looks like Venusaur. I personally don't think it looks anything like him until you make it purple. Adding the shell and keeping the markings is enough to make it different.

I think it's the shape of the face. The eyes are a little higher up, but otherwise the general shape is very similar. Generally Venusaur has a very toad-y face.
But if people don't find it blatant it's fine. I especially liked the tadpoles in its mouth

Honestly a good starter town was one of the few things B2/W2 did RIGHT. Aspertia had a gym, pokemon school, multiple apartment buildings, and even a fucking pokemon center. It felt soooooooo much more alive and vibrant than any other starting town has ever done.
Considering the rest of the game was merely a followup tale to the glorious act that was the B/W plot its sad.

There's a difference between GF formula and GF tendency. We should feel free to experiment at the same time while adapting.

An example would be to add a gym to or near the Safari Zone, or generally giving it more relevance. It hasn't been done before, but it's not totally beyond pokemon.
Only far out idea I've seen is the professor rival. Professor champ may be worth consideration though.

Does this mean that shit in the safari zone has some perfect IV/Hidden abilities? Like the Friend safari?

I did some more stuff with the map. Still haven't added all the decorations to the main section yet, but I did add some more buildings, put in grass in addition to dirt, and started work on setting up some stuff near the exit to the first route.

Looking at the overworld map again, and given the fact that there's no town between the starter town and the first dungeon, making the starting town a bit bigger and equipping it with things like a Pokemon Centre makes sense.

Also, that building in the southeast? Was thinking of making that a general goods store. Not a Poke Mart, but rather a place where you could buy a very limited selection of Pokemon-related stuff (early-game Pokeballs, escape ropes, etc.) in addition to other things, like house decorations and bottled water.

I'm kind of opposed to it. I like having both marts and Pokemon Centres available to help fill out my map layouts. But if everyone else thinks mooshing the two together is a good idea, then I'll adapt.

Same reason Aspertia City has a Pokemon Centre. Furthermore, if you take a look at the overworld map, you'll see the early-game sequence goes:

Starter town => route => dungeon => second town => route => third town

Meanwhile, a typical GameFreak game goes:

Starter town => route => Second town => route => Dungeon => Third town

You need a better start if you're going to be heading into a dungeon right off the bat.

Good evening, everyone. I see I missed a lot of drama again.

I adjusted the map a bit, I noticed somethings were wrong on it. Some "special areas" were marked as cities, and one city was marked as a "special area". I also added a small village at the crossroad before the first dungeon. Could be a really small out-post type area for supplies before you move along.

I tried to incorporate the tree more by making it look like there was a lower canopy below, although I think there is too much bush overall (perhaps I should remove the stuff on the neck?)

Would it be possible to turn the northeasternmost special location into a tiny town with a special location attached?

I was thinking of turning that place into a small island town based on Thursday Island, and having a big cave to explore.

However, if it has to stay as a special location only, I can work with that.
