Just asking this again in the new thread - can the cave-location in the extreme northeast of the current map be made into a town+cave arrangement? It would reduce frustration for people who black out in the cave to have a nearby Pokemon Centre, and it'd make sense since the Torres Strait Islands have their own little culture and population worth exploring.

Also, for the new town on the crossroads - I think I might do the map for there next, and base its layout and geography off of Newman, Western Australia.

If you guys are still taking suggestions, I believe this could work. Yeti Crabs are found in the sea close to Australia, so its still Australia-ish, right? This is not a real pic of course, its just a plushie of the crab, but its similar to what i would picture the design being like. Since its a "yeti" it could be Ice/Water.

Random up the water rocks to make it look less like a cage. I think we could have a fair bit of ocean before it cuts off. Smallish grass or item islands but generaly just surfable water.
Right now, it looks increadibly confined.

This is as far as I got when I drew it a few days ago.
I'm not the one doing the routes, and since this blue and white diagram was the only reference I had, I wasn't sure what colours to use, so it just got the default

Not cute enough. A trap fakemon starters fall into is that their first stage doesn't have the simple color scheme, exaggerated proportions to be cute or appealing and small features foreshadowing their later appearance (Bulbasaur's bulb, Oshawott's seashell).

I like the edits made and the addition of the New Zealand map but I originally color coded the routes added like:

Yellow is towns
Red is cities
Pinkish is e4
Green is forest area
Brown is caves
Water is sea

I don't know but, it looks odd to me having the yellow in cities as gyms. I suggest change the e4 color and use that as the gym color.

I'm not actually the real route guy. I just used MS Paint to edit the silhouette of NZ that >>16460006 made and stuck it onto the main map.

Speaking of which, the terrain version with New Zealand was slightly out of line with the terrain+features version posted at >>16460668. I've fixed it up now.

So, for the new town that's apparently going to come immediately after the starting town, I've decided to take a different approach.

Instead of making it "landscape", like most towns so far, I've tried to make it "portrait" in its orientation.

Still haven't thrown in the greenery and decorations yet, but still. What do you think?

Yeah, but in that case a being with legs, no matter how fishlike it may look, qualifies as well.
As long as the inspiration isn't blatantly a fish of the style of Magikarp I think purely aquatic animals should be considered as possible inspirations as well, as long as they are designed in a way that allows them to be amphibious in behaviour.

The first pseudo-dex had different roles covered, but I don't have the image.
It was like chansey clone, route-blocking-mon, fish to serpent line.
Just leave the rest unsorted, unless you feel like sorting them into single stage, two-stage and three-stage.

Re-did the frogs, I ended up just going with the tadpole-ish 1st stage to help put a bit of variety in. Tried to go along the Grass/Steel route, the 'moss' on it is sharp steel and slowly solidifies into armour. By the 3rd stage, it's only weakness is it's legs
Colours are shit tier- they're really just there to differentiate. It's pretty sketchy because they'll be going through another overhaul after everyones torn them apart!
Tried to make the 3rd stage look less like venasaur while giving it more of a shell.

I also love the idea of a waterfowl starter already mentioned, maybe something based off Coot-->Crake/Duck------>Black Swan/Brolga??? If anyone wanted to drawfag another starter idea!

To those complaining about the manta looking too humanoid/alienlike:
Pokemon is full of humanoid animals, some of them even being starters (blaziken, chesnaught)
A lot of fakedexes lack these kinds of designs probably because they seem non-pokemonish when actually they are VERY pokemon like. Regarding it looking like an alien, I drew it like that to reflect how stingrays look like spaceships, and how the depths of the ocean can remind one of space.

This gen had hawlucha, who was a manlet and looked alright.

The issue with this one isn't that it's an anthro, it's that it's design makes it look like it's just a guy in a suit, and I think that could be fixed by changing up the markings on the feet/how the wings are attached/merging the feet together.

I mean look at the middle stage, it doesn't look just like a person in a suit, and that's mostly because the setup has everything look like it's part of one body despite it being humanoid.

The starter's final stages were fine as they were. People were having issues with them because they built up what they thought the perfect starter end could look like, but were then disappointed by what they actually got.

Also, you're using the term anthro wrong. Just say that pokemon shouldn't look like people wearing suits if you want to say that.

That depends on how the story would want to be progressed. The key thing to remember is that you need to get your pokemon either before your first patch of grass, or before your first actual wild encounter.

You could feasibly go out on a limb, have a patch of grass at the end of the first route blocking your path then have a wild encounter. The person who gives you your pokemon shoves you over to the side and fights it for you as a tutorial or something, but that seems excessive and unnecessary.

Here's a map of Broome.

Now, one thing which was a bit of a problem - on the overworld map in the OP, Broome is shown to be entered from the west, and exited from the east. But because of its position on the coast, the only way to enter Broome from the east would be to approach from the north.

So, instead, I decided to have the entry come in from the south. The cave starts further west, but pulls a u-turn at the last minute to allow the player to exit into Broome.

Thoughts?

Your first stage needs to be changed, the second stage feels almost like a third stage (and looks pretty sweet), the last stage I have no idea what's going on anymore. I'd say build your second stage into a third stage and then go back to it's smaller forms, it's sort of a warrior-frog.

I like basing towns off of their real-world locations. There is no real-world location anywhere near where the town is actually on the map there; the places inland of Broome are just barren wasteland.

So, how about this? Changing the overworld map itself. It's only a minor tweak, it makes my map design work much better, and it doesn't affect the overall flow of the game.

I don't like it. I'd also rather we keep at least some features of our cities different than their real world counterparts. If you really don't want to change your design much, you can still make it fit by flipping it upside down and reversing it, and adding a path to the left. But not every city needs to be a perfect representation of some real city and can instead just be based on the region as a whole.

Lamoby fits the bill for a Water-Route / Great Barrier Reef pokemon. Making it a starter makes it so we have more fish than we need and takes away a slot from something that actually fits established pattern. The Water Buffalo or a water-bird are the best suggestions we've had. We just need art now. Every single day the same person comes around to push this fucking manta and they just don't get it.

Alright. I reworked the map. The coast is now more northern, rather than southern. The cave entrance is now on the west, allowing the player to exit eastwards.

Note, however, I haven't put the fancy finishing touches on the map yet. Just wanted to get a general layout done.

Yeh, the key thing to note is that you'll probably want to do more with the water ears and tail, or forgo it.

In all seriousness this is probably a starter that would benefit greatly from 'just gets bigger' so long as you make the coral grow along with it.

I would also suggest some kind of patterning on the back as that feels somewhat empty (you could go so far as to place a second set of coral there and have it grow as it gets bigger)

Nah, it was just me messing up the eyes a touch while trying to get more buffalo-esque dimensions on it. I feel like the legs may be too lean though (it feels a touch bovine), but I do think that the coral that makes the horns and the coral ring that the ears spout from should be one piece.

Something like that would allow for a helmet like my rough suggestions for the final stage to have the ears dripping down from underneath the horns, which fits in with the water buffalo motif.

I think best bet would be to take direction from corsola a touch. I also feel like the coral should be a brighter blue (something like royal blue) to push the coral feel to it. The muted color presented in the right image feels a bit too much like stone and the left one should probably be reserved for the shiny, due to a touch of confliction on such a small touch.

With the cutter rabbit, we could go with a non-traditional rivalry over an in-nature rivalry. Have a cutter/sheer rabbit that can cut through fences but also for fun shaves the steel-wool sheep.

Avoid it why? I think it's more clever than the sheep, because I assume the rabbit to be exceedingly common and thus desired to diminish, not instrumentalize.

Also heavily leaning towards single stages for rivalries. Seems to work better in general.

I assume you mean canines, and I remember that discussion. Just think playing up the plague nature of the rabbit makes more sense than doing something else. And a predator rival is literally the perfect way to execute that concept unless we resort to wildlife keepers and/or actual fences.

Infernape got tail fire to the head and nobody questioned it. I think it's there to make use of the false head actual thorny lizards have - it looks pretty neat in my opinion. We should really ditch the tail flames on the first two evos though.

If we push this further back, there's going to be a total riot when we start finalizing mons. Not long ago a guy promplty left once he heard we even considered adding GF mons. This needs to be as clear and offical as the fact that the region is based on Australia how did that poll go btw?.

Ya Thorndle is a fire starter, but why does he have his fire?

What I'm thinking is:
Fire/Ground: Thorndle, the drought pokemon

-Produces immense heat within its body, often producing heat waves off of its back

- as it evolves, the heat increases, causing the thorns on his back to grow and glow like lava (they could actually be made of solidified lava, since its a ground type as well)

-with its final evo maybe we can fuse the two ones standing at the moment... maybe take the beard and rock spikes from option 2 and put it on the Thorndle line one? But make it so that the Rock spikes have cracks of magma peaking through?

What do you think?

There's a reason surveys make sense, the chance to vote is as good as having actually voted. It's binding, and much more so than the looseness of literally everything in this project.

No, we HAVE to set the basic framework into stone. It's the entire foundation of the project. I've seen everyone treat the 100 mon limit as official although it's not. We need to choose designs based on that limit and the balance we want to achieve. We need to know how much asutralia and how much something else we want. This cannot be decided later, unless we want to risk both tons of wasted effort and a huge ruckus.
And I have a feeling there are enough people around interested in taking a survey like that. It's not like we're deciding on a design, it's more like the poll we've had.

This. So much this. It just screams "Craaawling in my Skiiiiin". It's way over designed for a Pokemon (let alone a starter (Thorndle being the exception, referring mostly to 2nd and 3rd stages). The 2nd and 3rd stage are nothing like the first - it just gets bigger, slightly longer, has darker colors and a ton more spikes.

It looks interesting, but the horns should probably be horizontal rather than vertical, like the standard water buffalo. Other than that it looks pretty cool.

I should also note to be wary not to overlap too much with Terrakion.

Fire/Ground is weak against - Water, Ground.
So frog has to learn a ground move for coverage against it (Fire/Ground is honestly a very good defensive typing, making it bulky would be good)

Grass/Steel - Fire, Fighting
Cow will need to learn a fighting move to deal with this.

The biggest issue is that Lizard is getting SE stabs against both while Frog and Cow are getting short changed in this regard. It's something to be wary about when balancing them.

I don't know if frog has been decided, but I'm seeing a lack of data for the other candidates to work with.

Cow learning pony sword sounds alright, but I wouldn't lock it into that without figuring out what it wants to be, and frog I'm unsure on what it's spreads want to be as well.

Both seem like they should be physically bulky and somewhat slow (in fact all 3 feel this way), but at the same time I don't think we'd want to perfectly retread Ferrothorn.

Still uses the horribly over designed middle stage (which looks nothing even remotely similar to the first) with the final stage looking uninteresting (it also looses the ever important face spikes and just has a long line of spikes down it's back, nothing of any substance). >>16467873 was over designed, yes, but at least the final stage there looked somewhat interesting with the false head, pentagram face and caged back spikes. >>16467911 has a much better middle and final stage (having a visibly tough looking beard, rock spikes, false head, outward jutting tail spikes). the design you've got also doesn't seem very Pokemon.

What I want to see if the molten spikes being kept. It's creative and I can't think off the top of my head any Pokemon that really uses them. It also helps in the ground element of it because most of these designs scream rock instead.

Someone mentioned having some sort of barbecue feature to it with the spikes on the back laid out like a grill. I think that would be really neat and unique. Barbecue would be too perfect to make a name out of as well. Molocue or Barbevil perhaps.

I believe the water type is necessary because the crab lives underwater. Inkay apparently lives on land.

So far, from what I've seen, people only like the IDEA of a cutter rabbit. The actual drawn designs, no one seems to like (good god, people hated the one with the springs and literal scissors on it's head). From what I've seen people actual like the magic bunny design and idea wise. Calling people a faggot for making/liking an idea is weak.
