ITT: Weird Evolution

What evolutions do you think is the wierdest? I've always found Golem weird, Geodude is a tiny rock creature, which evolves into Graveler, a bigger rock creature. Then, all of a sudden, it evolves again into Golem and now it's suddenly a lizard trapped inside a rock.

It has a theme, at least. Graveler to Golem is completely random, I agree with OP.

Golbat to Crobat is a bit off to me. Maybe it's the change in color or the fact that Crobat seems to be smaller than Golbat, I don't know.

I feel like Bellossom is kind of random, it's much smaller than Gloom and it's this "pretty" type flower when Oddish is basically a weed and Vileplume is a giant smelly plant. It resembles Oddish and Vileplume to some extent, but it seems really out of place. Being the only Pokemon to LOSE a type on evolution (aside from Mega Aggron I guess?) makes it even odder.

Golem was the result of a design that had to stand out from its previous forms. They couldn't just make a slightly larger rock with even more limbs. The end result is out there and for good reason. Same with Dragonite. It couldn't be a slightly larger Dragonair with some mild design tweaks. Simplicity can be a bad thing and those two saved the lines from being bland.

My vote goes to Samurott, who was the literal result of artist's block. Oomura fucked up with it. Whether Golem or Dragonite were the result of artist's block too is a mystery, but it wouldn't be a surprise.

It's Hindu mythology. Golem is based on the world turtle. The shell represents tectonic plates.

Graveler is partly based on sheva or vishnu with its four arms.

And to me, Feebas --> Milotic was just obvious that it was an Ugly Duckling to a beautiful swan, since you're supposed to force feed Beauty blocks in RSE.

The problem is not what it evolves to conceptually but the thing that it evolves to. Why not a fish that resembles a cannon? Why is it a goddamn octopus?

Because a cartoon octopus is more similar to a tank that any other cartoon fish, it's not that hard to understand. In this case, the theme takes priority over the design. Same with Gyara or Milotic, hence why I compared those lines.

As for why it wasn't Water/Dragon, GF seemed to be very conservative with Dragons back it the day. It seems like it was originally supposed to something unique to Dragonite, so that you wouldn't know how to deal with it when fighting Lance. And since they care so much about consistency, GF never bothered to change it after they decided to make Dragon a proper type.

By the way. Adult axolotl don't have gills. That Dragonite illustration clearly has them, ergo it's not an axolotl and instead one of the many species of aquatic salamanders that exist in the world.

The Dragonite line is based on the ancient Sea Serpents to Dragon myth. I believe they are called lindworms, or some other mythological creature. The story is that the sea serpents cocoon into large dragons, who give birth to more sea-serpents. Or something along those lines.

But Deino->Zweilous is the weirdest because it LOST a head! (The mouth-hands have no brains.) Did the new head that emerged take over and kill/absorb the original Deino? Did they merge? Is it just a case of "survival of the fittest" (hence why Zweilous's heads are always competing). Did both heads die (and become the brainless mouth-hands), and a new brain replaced them? Did Deino's brain split as Zweilous only to merge back together? I guess that would explain why it's so hostile. Its mind must have gone insane.

Surskit to Masquerain has always been the most dissapointing evolution for me. Not only does it lose it's unique typing(a great one at that) but Masquerain doesn't even look like anything.

Hydreigon has, I'm sure, the most complex body structure of any Pokemon that is also a vertebrate (presumably). I don't see what is so weird about the Graveler - Golem Evolution, as i see it Graveler is made out of/covered in small rocks/gravel then when Graveler evolves the rocks/gravel from it's face, arms and legs recedes back to its torso (while revealing its actual head, arms and legs.) and fuses with the rocks covering its torso creating a boulder like shell.

I understand the legend it's based on, and that explains the arms, legs, and wings. But why is he fat? Why is he orange? What's with the goofy eyes and mouth? Where did to jewels go? Where did the majestic wing ears go?
