It could be that they had that idea already in mind back when they first considered trade-evolutions. In this case, having to trade a Machoke for a Graveler.
Machoke evolves into Machamp, gaining the same four arms and the same flat kind of face of Graveler.
Graveler evolves into Golem, gaining the same dinosaur-like face as Machoke, and more muscular looking limbs.
