The original Gen 3 installments (Ruby and Sapphire) have sold 16 million units in a 4-year generation averaging 4 million units sold a year. The original Gen 5 installments (Black and White) have sold 15 million units in a 3-year generation averaging 5 million units sold a year.
That is not even taking into account the fact that Ruby and Sapphire have been out for 6 years longer than Black and White. If you factor in sales of Ruby and Sapphire AFTER Diamond and Pearl came out the yearly sales for Gen 3 would be even lower.
