FRLG also has the problem of having way too much space due to poor tile scaling. You're a midget in a world designed for people twice your height. The world is 4x bigger, but without increasing content, making for an empty landscape where you're always running to frantically reach your next objective. Being able to run everywhere is minor recompense when you're not actually moving faster than walking in gen 1, while also increasing the monotony of the enlarged, still empty areas.
FRLG is the only Pokemon game I've fallen asleep to; the poor tile scaling combines with the bland color scheme to guarantee that if I'm ever playing a Kanto game, it's RBY version, which I can at least justify with interesting mechanics and better scaling/pacing.
