Me and my friends spent hours trying to figure out how to get there. We thought Mew might be there.

Did anyone else come up with theories of secret areas in Gen I?

Not Gen I, but in Gen II in Kanto I have always thought it was a way to actually enter the Safari Zone (which lately turned out to have a beta version), the Pewter City Museum and the closed Underground Path and Bike Shop. In fact it would be nice to have a sorta of Gen II hack/expansion with all the closed areas accessible. I think one that goes close to this exists but I haven't tried it yet.

There is absolutely no reason for there to be grass there other than to fuck with the player. Why not trees, or plain ground?

When I was younger I thought the NPC that stands here was trapped there for good. I never saved/progressed in the game for a month or so, so I'd keep seeing him and be confused.

I wanted to save him... I just had no idea about surf at the time. Same goes for the swimmer you can see off coast to the left of Olivine.
