The main thing that kept the quality of games so high in the past was the fact that it was an underground culture and if you played video games you were a guaranteed faggot loser
Now, it's cool to admit you're a "nerd lmao :)" Notice that the actual games these people play don't really matter. The quality of the game they are playing is merely accessory to the fact that they can post on twitter about how they're playing the game. The game doesn't have to be good. In fact, it can be bad. As long as people use video games primarily as a social merit badge, there will never be good games again. Why make good when you can make bad and sell better than if you made good?
All I can do is think back to UT99 days. I put my soul into that stupid fucking computer game, and I fought other people who did the same. I hunched over my computer with sweaty palms clicking furiously at another hunch-backed pasty acne-ridden nerd virgin loser and our fights were so intense, so emotional, so transcendent, I am convinced that it was some unrecognized form of poetry. Not many people will ever understand that, and most will call me a faggot for feeling that way, but the saddest part isn't that; that saddest part is knowing I'll never experience that feeling again.
