It's been 17 years (or technically 13 since shinies started existing). How is it even mathematically possible that I've never found one?

Not any of the posters here, but it's different. Chaining already has a higher chance, and it is different to just be walking and suddenly a shiny appears.

You can literally stand in front of water and chain fish for them.
Just take a pokemon with suction cups or sticky hold ability and keep running from things until you come across a shiny.

And then, a couple of years later, exactly the same thing could happen on another playthrough, on exactly the same route, with exactly the same pokemon. Yeah, it would really suck if that happened. Especially if that person never found any more shinies after that.

...yep, that really would suck.

I have several hundred, if not several thousand, hours across all the games, and yet I have still never found a shiny outside of the fucking ones they give you
