The transition to 3D did take a toll. To make up for that, this will probably be a remake heavy generation. Bets are currently on Gen III remakes.
It will have as much interaction as previous gens did, which is you will be able to transfer over.

There's more to do this gen post game than previous gens, there just isn't some huge island that opens up where you can do crap, instead you just get a little town and friend safari's, which I excluded since those are "multiplayer" content. Not to mention breeding overhaul with Destiny Knot, which means it's actually a practical way to spend time now.
