So I've never used a mega evolution before, and I think I want to try one out. Designwise, my favorites are Kangaskhan, Ampharos, Scizor, Medicham, Gardevoir, and Banette. I've heard that Kangaskhan is a little TOO good, so I'm wary to use her, but I haven't heard as much about the others. Are they any good? Any particular strategies?

It really sucks, cause it's mega ability, prankster, doesn't actually activate on the turn you mega evolve. Plus he still remains pretty flimsy.

I don't really know much about the others, since banette is muh bro and I had to find out if his mega would be usable.

Kanga is very strong, but also common because of that.
Ampharos is underappreciated, shockingly bulky and high Sp Atk, but doesn't really have a strong reason to chose it as your mega besides liking the design.
Scizor just doesn't bring much to the table as a mega. It just gets better stats. That's it. They aren't even spectacularly good.
Medicham is a beast, but like Ampharos really doesn't have a strong "oh shit look what you get if you pick him". He just because more powerful.
Gardevoir I don't think is worth using. I've yet to be impressed by one.
Banette, sadly like >>16565636 said, just sucks. The only reason to use it is because you want to use Mega Banette. The movepool, stats, and ability just feel miss-matched, plus your Prankster doesn't kick in until the turn after you mega due to turn orders being set already. Just a disappointment.

It's not sableye, stop using it as sableye. You don't need to be in a situation where you destiny bond turn 1 unless you're just not good. And even then you can just run protect if you're that bad.

I just don't think Prankster is a good ability for Banette, and then it doesn't have the defensive stats to run anything but Sucker Punch or Shadow Sneak, which makes it extremely predictable.

MegaBanette is basically Sableye except it's better at actually killing things rather than being a little sneaky bitch.

Shadow Sneak and Sucker Punch ensure a hefty priority hit the turn it Megas, then you have Will-o to cripple and Destiny Bond to drop one mon of your choice.

I run M-Banette all the time and it's a solid Pokemon, it just plays totally different from the "lol so strougn sweep time" tactic that the majority of popular megas utilize. If you need a priority user or a physical sweeper crippler, M-B is fuckin' right on.

Also OP mentioned Ampharos, he's an absolute machine. The only reason he isn't OU is because not enough people have caught on to his power. I've swept plenty of rating +1700 teams on Showdown using Agility/Dragon Pulse/Thunderbolt/Focus Blast. Mega-Amph is my top recommended Mega after Pinsir.

Hey man don't get me wrong, I love the guy. I was so happy when I saw that not only did he get a mega but that it makes him fabulous.
He's a very solid choice, strong pokemon, I just don't know if he's "holy shit try this" unless you already like Ampharos or think the hair is cool.
He's a bulky special sweeper. That's really good, but it doesn't change the meta or anything or force much counter-play.

modest seems too slow even after an agility

He 1HKOs like 60% of the Smogonfag shit, though. Talonflame, Sableye, Tyranitar, they all drop first hit, and Mandibuzz is a 2HKO most of the time which is super nice

I don't think that stat boost is worth using up your mega slot. No type change, no ability change, just some added bulk on an already bulky and defensive typed Pokemon.
I'm not saying he's bad, I just don't think it's really worth using a mega version unless you're only using it because you really like Scizor.

What you don't seem to understand is that Megas are optional to begin with and that outclassed != not viable. Many play differently and really should just be treated like another Pokemon on your team.

I've been playing doubles nonstop since Y's release, and have been running Mega Gardevoir the entire time. She's (Yes, mine is a female) quite good in the doubles environment so long as you have a nicely balanced team. The Fairy typing has really helped it a lot, although Bullet Punch is quite annoying. I have multiple ways of dealing with BP users though, so it's a non-issue so long as my team is healthy.

I still can't wait until Pokebank and I transfer over a Gardevoir with Hyper Voice. It's going to be awesome.

It seems that way when people say there's not much reason to use it. It's the go to Scizor form when using a Bulky Sword's Dance set. The fact that it "uses a Mega Slot" is almost always trivial for something that is optional to begin with.

A team should be based on synergy and strategy, not which mega to use. For the most part megas serve completely different roles to that of their normal counterparts.

Megas are optional and aren't even necessary to play well, so using one that works well with a team is in no sense a waste of a slot.

Except you shouldn't use Life Orb Scizor to begin with. You either want him banded for better revenge killing or a Mega for a Bulky Sword's Dance set. As a Mega he's already notably strong, and he's bulky enough for a Sword's Dance or two and I'd argue it surpasses Life Orb Scizor with just 1 Sword's Dance boost.
