Last time I went to the Pokemon VGC I didn't encounter any taunting, so after I beat X I made a Musharna with both walls, Trick Room, and Toxic for my doubles team. I've been playing online matches and I still haven't been taunted even once yet, so it's working out very well (as long as I switch out when Gengar is around).

I'm curious though, should I be expecting a Taunt from someone who knows what they're doing? Just how common is the move in the competitive scene?

I've seen a few in doubles and triples running Dual Screens and Trick Room, but most have run a final move to cover taunt. Great Trick Room pokemon though, sets up a team nicely.

Thanks for the input. I'm considering using an offensive move instead of Toxic, but my Mushy isn't trained at all in its offensive stats and I'm not sure which move is best. Plus Toxic sets up my Heat Rotom's Hex on unburnable opponents.

For the sake of Doubles, Toxic really just isn't worth it. It's damage over time, but battles go way too fast, especially with the 2v2 pick 4 match system VGC is used to, for toxic to ever do any amount of substantial damage. That's the same reason people run sitrus berry over leftovers.

Toxic on my Carbink has saved me on many occasions in Doubles. I can stall it out with Protect, or I can Toxic an opponent that is running Sturdy or a Focus Sash, hit them and activate it to kill them at the end of the turn with the Toxic damage.

I'm gonna run Musharna on my team because it looks to have great synergy with my sweepers, just gutted I can't use it in VGC.

taunt is pretty necessary in competitive which is why aromatisse has become one of the most common pokes in the higher tiers of play. aroma veil prevents either user from being taunted or confused which is a godsend for trick room sweeping and heal pulse support. pair her up with a mega mawile, mega ampharos, musharna, chandelure, azumarill, or conkledurr and you basically won't be stoppable.

Kalos Dex mons only. Unfortunately Musharna is Friend Safari only so it's not found in the regional dex. Such a shame, would have been the perfect addition to my team.

I was thinking Trick Room/Helping Hand/Safeguard/Psychic @ Mental Herb as a set, looks to have everything I need to support my main sweepers (Specs Scrappy Exploud). Any advice/critique?

It's still legal if it's actually in one of the Kalos Dexes, but Musharna is only in the National dex.

TR isn't nearly as strong as it was last year. The best TR setters so far seem to be Gourgeist and Reuniclus, and Talonflame destroys both of these.

As long as they're in the 3 regional Kalos dexes, & not XYZ/Mewtwo, they're good. You can use their Hidden Abilities if you can only find them in the FS too.

I would have preferred anything that could be found in Kalos pre-Bank, it would have still insured anything bred was still legitimately done, but I still have a bunch of options.

Seems solid for support. I personally have a thing against choice items in doubles (less switching out, which means you could be stuck with one move you don't want later), but if it works then stick with it.

hot shit. i keep seeing people say trick room isn't that viable but we've gotten a few more good mons to use, and i'm still rekking both showdown and rated (gamefreak pls). even in singles where the argument COULD be used.

Honestly, my Exploud has taken down almost everything that isn't resistant to STAB Boomburst, & even some stuff that does, in one go. This is without HH support. With Scrappy, Ghosts aren't even an issue either. It can tank a hit or two as well to get off 1 or 2 more before it goes down. I've never needed to use another move outside of the Maison.

Prankster users such as Sableye and Liepard (and in previous years Tornadus and Thundurus) run Taunt very often, at least among good players. Just try to make sure a single taunt doesn't fuck over your whole team, unless you're running Mental Herb, and possibly scout out potential Taunters with Protect so you don't waste a turn.

Having said that, the lack of genies in VGC14 means taunters as a whole will be less common, even if they do have the potential to spell ruin for many Pokémon.

Trick Room is pretty OP on WiFi for now because of the sheer number of idiots running Speed Boost Blaziken and fast things like Greninja, Mega Gengar etc., largely because Smogon banning them (or having a fun gimmick) makes idiots think they must be unconditionally the best things to use. When the metagame settles down, I expect teams to run more slow bulky stuff to counter TR.

Same here, with Musharna's support backing up Mega Mawile, I'm doing having more success than I did in gen 5. I've been doing free battles though since for some reason my game can't always connect when I choose rated. Free battle probably isn't a good gauge of how effective my team is, I imagine.

Fair enough. These two cover each other pretty well, and Acrobatics' nerf this gen (as well as the lack of genies) buffs Ludicolo.

Very threatening, but less so with Ice Beam and Draco Meteor's nerfs, combined with the fact that Kingdra (along with Latios) are the dragons that high-level players specifically EV to counter.

The whole point of doubles is to synergize your Pokemon so they work well together, so I agree that having something like weather or TR to tie them together is often a good idea.

You might want to check the attitude unless you want more people to post about how to counter your choices.

Spore barely got touched. Wow, one single ability can now prevent spore from effecting them, such a nerf.

Grass types got buffed, Spore didn't get nerfed. It was an indirect nerf, similar to Thunder Wave.

An indirect nerf is still a nerf, I doubt Amoonguss will be as broken this year as it was the last one.

Last time I saw the rules, moves only obtainable through Pokémon Bank were illegal, and the only user of said move (who can teach it to Smeargle) comes from Bank...
At least is what I hope it means not to have an explicit rule...

That's what I usually run for my opening move on my VGC team. Fun fact, neither Musharna or Reuniclus can be OHKO by their weaknesses except by Escavalier or Heracross running Megahorn.

The times I see that the opponent has Meowstic, Klefki, or any common Taunters or Fake Out users, I swap Amoonguss for Liepard.

Liepard (F) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 Spd / 4 SDef / 252 HP
Jolly Nature
- Taunt
- Fake Out
- Charm
- Foul Play

Quick Guard + Fake Out/Taunt stops this, but is a rare combo too see, so I'm not worried about it.

The way I interpret this is that nothing is preventing you from using a Smeargle and Darkrai in a double battle in-game and acquiring Dark Void like that. You're not using Darkrai itself, so the "no special Pokemon" rule is circumvented through use of Smeargle.

Regardless, Fake Out ruins Smeargle's day much more than a Taunt. Smeargs can only run Mental Herb or Focus Sash, so while an Herb saves it from a Taunt, nothing can stop it from getting slapped in the face, which then leave it open for any thing to wipe it the fuck out next turn. I mean, there's probably someone out there running a Scarfed Dark Void Smeargle, but I highly doubt they're many of them.

Now I'm curious about training an Exploud with Scrappy, it sounds very useful. Could anyone trade me one, or a Whismer/Loudred with its hidden ability? I have spare Munna, Mawile, Duskull, Roggenrola, Spheal, Eevee, Rotom, and Scraggy, most with two or three perfect IVs and some with 0 speed. FC is 3995-6529-9824.
