There is going to be a free trial going on for the first month.
Also, although I am not positive, I think there is also going to be an app released alongside Pokebank called Poketransfer which will do the same thing minus the online storage.

gmail gives every single registered user a couple of dozen Pokebanks' worth of online storage space for free.

Pokebank, in case you were wondering, is less than 1GB of actual storage space. Most cloud storage services give you the first 5GB free. Pokebank is a ripoff, and the problem isn't so much inability to afford it as it is being skeptical that a recurring $5/year is actually FAIR for what you're getting.

The only reason you're paying for this is because Nintendo has walled their garden with encryption and you don't have a choice. This is actually a regression compared to most DLC, seeing as it's actually a seperately developed feature, that has a discernible purpose, and isn't just the monetization of a previously existing feature. They have every right to charge for something like that, what you're saying basically amounts to "they should just give me that for free". Well why should they? Because they theoretically could? Most of those online storage companies only offer free storage out of the hope that you'll eventually start forking over money and that forked over money is what allows them to offer some for free, nintendo has no expectation of profit at all, and will lose money on this feature if they don't charge for it.

What i mean is that you could use them in random matches and against passerbys. Random matches and ranked matches only have one difference, that you get your rank up or down.

You could theoretically move all your Pokémon from Gen V to Gen VI in that first month, but if that timeframe expires, or if you restart your game afterward and want to transfer any of those Pokémon, you have to pay money for it.

Can the transfer be used standalone from the bank to transfer Gen V Pokémon to Gen VI, or is Pokébank a necessary tool in that transfer?

Pokebank will probably work by directly accessing the saved game on the cartridge. Outside of when the game is running, nothing can access the save files.
B/W/2, actually are built differently from standard DS carts due to the IR sensor built in. As such, the saved game data is accessed in a different way that I believe, requires the game to be running.
Long story short, most, if not all flash carts will not work with Pokebank.

Just get 1 of the original game cartridge and inject your save files into the cartridge with the NDS Adapter Plus or something. You can even use it to backup the save file on the original cartridge into your computer. Shit is cheap.

Nope. Pokétransfer is an app that will transfer Pokémon from gen5 games to the Pokébank. From Pokébank you can transfer between gen6 and upwards. You cannot connect gen5 games to Pokébank without Pokétransfer and you can't send Pokémon back to gen5
