I prefer to use Mons I actually like that are potentially Viable.
Currently my team is: Shiny Dragonite, Shiny Hydreigon, Garchomp, Metagross, Dusknoir, And shiny Mega Alakazam. all are some of my favorites for different reasons.

There's two camps in both parties.

There's the karenfags that just use their favorite without any attempt at giving them a good moveset. They battle like shit and make all other karenfags look bad. They're also the ones that try to argue that garbage like Dunsparce has a niche and it's useful somewhere.

There's then karenfags that understand that they would probably lose if they used certain things and instead go with other favorites that are much better. Not talking "Scizor has been a bro since forever" types. Often good battlers.

There's brain-dead smogonfags that uses the most OU of OU Pokemon because they were told that they're the best, but have no idea how to use them. Battle like shit.

Then there's smogon fags that are simply just damn good at battling and team building.

There are actually remarkably few Pokemon that don't do ok in NU. The only stuff off the top of my head are stuff that are outright strictly worse (Illumise vs Volbeat) or are just crap all together (Watchog, Beautifly, most other early route mons, NFEs of a NU or RU Mon etc.).

Of course, there are always gonna be the "OU" of NU, stuff like Samurott, Zangoose, Exeggutor, Jynx, and many Pokemon won't be able to handle the offensive power they provide.

There are a lot of pokemon that I really like because they have an interesting typing or a cool design, but is competitively shitty.

Only thing they can say about it is "HURRRRRR THE TYPING DOESN'T MAKE MUCH SENSE, IT JUST GIVE IT MORE WEAKNESSES, BRAIXEN SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRE/FIGHTING BECAUSE THAT'S A REALLY GOOD TYPE COMBINATION"

I can't imagine not being able to just fucking enjoy a pokemon. It's like they don't even see the pokemon, they just see their stats. Can't even appreciate aesthetics.

I bet with every new game, they catch a new pokemon, go look up it's stats and movepool, and if it's shit, they just throw it away.

I like it when the aesthetics and usability provide neat little quirks about Pokemon. Take Aegislash, for example. You're fighting it, and expect to take a physical attack, but then the sword starts shooting balls of shadows at you.

Honestly, I find most Pokemon designs to be pretty much equal in quality. It's when the Pokemon itself is great that I see the appeal. Talonflame? Pretty damn sweet. Delibird? Piece of shit. Mamoswine? Basest of the bros. Pyroar? Disappointment pokefied.

I'm just saying they'll look at some things like Greninja or Braixen and immediately say "Why do they exist, those type combinations are shit".

If they had their way, and every pokemon ever only had a dual type that covered up some weaknesses, pokemon would be boring as shit.

There would be Fire/Fighting, Psychic/Fighting, Dark/Fighting, Anything/Fighting fucking everywhere.

Oh, and Dragon and Ground everywhere because dragons are good and Earthquake is good.

I'm not saying my way of playing is better, but it seems like they severely limit the game for no real reason.

See, the thing is that both terms only refer to the extremes. When people use smogonfag, they refer to the copy/pasta guys who only see stats and kick a pokemon to the curb the instant it stops being classified as OU by smogon. Smogonites who actually do their shit aren't really smogonfags but they feel alluded to when people shit on smogonfags.

Similarly, Karenfags are really just smogon haters, but people who agree with Karen's philosophy (or just like to fap to her) often get involved.

A person can know how to play competitive Pokemon properly (As you'd call a smogonfag) and still enjoy trying to work their favorites into the mix and enjoy using them when not battling seriously. I for example, like Qwilfish, who is shit compared to alot of other Pokemon competitively. Im not going to get mad and act like a retard because Quilfish gets destroyed by stronger Pokemon because that's just how it is. I know how to battle competitively and therefore wouldn't use him in it, but I'd gladly use him in a lower tier suited for him on in the actual games.

People who refuse to use certain Pokemon because they are shit are idiots, although there are not as many of these people around when compared to the idiots who will get mad because Espurr cant beat a Dragonite.

But, if you look at the OU usage stats, you find many type combinations used, and most types are fairly represented.

The only real change would be shit-mons like Beautifly and Beedrill would get some amazing buff while mons like MGengar and Blaziken would get knocked down a peg. There is room for mono-types everywhere, and not all type combinations need to cover weaknesses. Talonflame is doubly weak to Sneaky Stones, yet it is all over the place. Dark and Rock don't cover any of each other's weaknesses, yet Tyranitar is still amazing. Yes, Scizor has a great defensive typing, but Steel isn't the best offensive type.

I'm not sure what people's phobia of bad Pokemon getting buffed is.

Exca has the extra power and better movepool to become an excellent sweeper. (Steel is a great type, mane)
Excadrill also quad-resists pebbles and is immune to toxic spikes, making it better at spinning too.

Contrary to popular belief, a small group of people on the internet that are way too serious about Pokemon isn't their target audience.

To be honest, I'm still surprised they even acknowledge stuff like EVs and IVs at all.

Their thought process was probably something like "Hey, a bunch of people like Blaziken, let's give it a rad mega evolution".

Not every decision should be based solely around competitve play. It's an RPG, and is designed like a single player RPG first and a competitive arena probably comes somewhere near the bottom of the list. Mega Blaziken and the like the really good weapons you find tucked away in dungeons.

Plenty of pokemon are meant to be ornimental or are built for things like beauty contests. But seeing someone manage to use one successfully in a competition, even if eventually they lose dramatically, really makes the game more fun.

Pokemon can't be both completely balanced for competitively play and still be a fun single player game.

You wouldn't have any reason to upgrade from your shitty rodents that are always at the start of the game.

You want some pokemon to be stronger than others so that the player will catch more and more pokemon.

It would be like balancing all the equipment in a standard RPG. The wooden sword you get at the start would be just as good as the sword of infinity you get at the end of the game, which obviously would make for a very uninteresting game.

Take a MMO that has PvP. Everyone uses end game gear. No one would bother using anything less. And making all gear as good as the end game gear would make the entire game boring. Hey, let's go into this dungeon and get a sword that's exactly equal to the one I have now!

So yeah, I still want pokemon to have a fun single player mode, and I want some pokemon to be completely superior to some other pokemon.

I prefer playing competitively but it dosent stop me from using favorites or from using diffrent sets. Back in fourth gen when I first started I tried using a bulk sceptile with Protect, Substitute, Leech Seed and Seismic toss. Was kind of a unique set and I did a few late game sweeps with it.

Its always fun to explore options to see what you can figure out.

That's either a poor analogy, or you just play shitty MMOs. Pokemon aren't akin to best-in-slot gear. They are party members, and they all fill either broad or niche roles. There's nothing wrong with having early monsters being strong enough for single-player and competitive gameplay. Just like how there's nothing wrong with a starting party member in a RPG being arguably the best character. It's entirely your choice to use them and how they're used.

Besides, even if you wanna pull the equipment argument, what kind of crap RPG doesn't offer gear variety? Waving around best-in-slot mindsets just means the game is incredibly linear. Pokemon is not; certain pokemon are clearly much more proficient in specific areas than others. There's no true pokemon that is defined as the go-to for any role, they all offer distinct advantages and disadvantages, even if you compare mons from different tiers. It's not "+10 STR/DEX, why use anything else?", it's more "+10 STR or +10 DEX or +5 STR/DEX, which suits my build more?"

Some have full splits, some are full physical and others are full special.

The tournament and online play don't use that, and as a result entry hazards don't matter nearly as much beyond providing brief damage to a pokemon entering the field.

All of the catagories sort of fall apart outside of the Smogon Meta-game, which isn't really something I personally encounter with my actual pokemon (rather than just sim data ones)

That said, I think Karenfags aren't quite getting that if you want to use what you like, don't get fussy when the rules of Smogonfags slightly mock your favorite pokemon because within their rules your pokemon doesn't perform well typically.

I think 2v2, which is the standard, works totally fine. While yeah, the team preview might fuck up some fun tricks like a Shedinja or something, for the most part it's fun knowing that you can look up someone's team and figure out how to best fuck them with what you've got.

I wish they allowed for more options, though. I really at this point just want a Colosseum style game with a bunch of rules and conditions you can set.

It's not fucking Quake. Pokemon isn't about hardcore competition, and it never will be. You can't make it into a serious competitive game without making massive changes. I don't understand why people try to play it like that. Just go fucking play Quake or Starcraft or Street Fighter if you want a competitive game.

The point is that there is absolutely no reason for shitmons. You can have a team of perfectly good pokemon available to you in the early parts of the game via unevolved forms. Like how in Plat you could have a perfectly good team by the time you reach the first gym of your starter, whichever relevant combination of Budew/Ponyta/Psyduck, Geodude, Starly/Zubat, and Shinx, which although weak at that point will be a stout team by the time you get to the E4.

Because those pokemon are more easily obtainable. That's just how they made it.

It's like asking why isn't a standard sword as good as a sword you get for beating a dungeon.

Of course one is going to be better than the others. You have to work much harder to get one than the other one. It's why pseudo-legendaries are really good. They're rare, hard to catch, usually only available near the end of the game, and take a long time to evolve.

If your Beedrill could compete with that, it would make catching pokemon completely uninteresting. You wouldn't ever be looking around for a rare pokemon, or something to replace your shitmon.

The same way you get new equipment as you progress through a RPG, you get new pokemon. I mean, how boring would a RPG be if you started out with equipment that you never need to upgrade?

I don't know about you, but in each game, my team is almost constantly changing, and I've never had to grind or anything. In fact, in X and Y, my pokemon were almost consistently overleveled, despite the fact that my team would change a bit after each gym. I could go through with just one set team and never change, but that would get pretty boring.

Sometimes I see a pokemon, and I think "Oh that looks cool, I wonder what kind of stats it has" and it turns out to be pretty good, so I phase out one of my weaker ones for it.

Remember, GF has to make each game under the assumption that there's going to be people that have never played pokemon before.

When you first played pokemon, did you get a team of six and then never bother to catch anything else? No, you were catching them all over the place, seeing what moves they had, what types they were, what their stats were, etc. You weren't just trying to get to the end as fast as possible so you can do all the post game bullshit.

Also my team is usually never complete (i.e. all six slots filled) until I get right to the E4, if at all and even then my pokemon are barely on par with the first E4 member. That's pretty much how I do (did) it. A team of 4-5 pokemon with zero switching, and I'm still not overleveled. I like being slightly underleveled anyway, it makes it more challenging.
