Why does everyone love ruby/sapphire/emerald or "hoenn" so much?
I'm generally curious. not a troll.
It was honestly one of the worst pokemon games i'v ever played it was boring and short, and the story line was awful. Why the fuck does everyone love it so much....

I'll full on admit part of it for me is nostalgia factor. I started with Yellow, then played Crystal (where I finally learned how to save a game, I was a dense child), and Ruby was the first pokemon game I played and sort of knew what I was doing, so it seemed like the best to me. Aside from that, it's got a pretty nice overworld for one thing, very varied. The volcano, the desert, the ocean, the tropics, it was all pretty cool.

Secrets bases were the shit and anyone who says otherwise is a cheeky cunt. not really but damn secret bases were fucking cool

Before it became speed boost smogon mega chicken, Blaziken was one of the coolest starters to come out, net to Sceptile, when I was growing up. Still think so. A lot of my favorites came out of gen 3, too. The gym leaders were cool, double battles were new and weird and awesome. Plenty of secrets and rumors still fuck the people that told me you could find deoxys using the space center. The list goes on.

In the end, I think it all comes down to taste, nostalgia, and personal preference. A lot of good came out of Hoenn, but it hasn't aged well, with the most obvious example being the lack of a physical/special split. Not only is a remake wanted, but it's almost needed. Both for pokemon availability and because the originals in terms of visuals and sound, just don't hold up as well.

That said, Hoenn was and is still my favorite region and I hope we see it again in the form of a fully 3D 6th gen remake.

Not a super huge fan of RSE myself, I feel like they squandered the fucking amazing geography they had and made the layout far too bland; needed a bigger sense of adventure, a feeling like you could really get lost in the rinaforest or in a cave.

I think Emerald did right by introducing the battle frontier. I clocked in more time than I know into that place. Best postgame. Sinnoh battle frontier a shit.

it was sabotaged both by its status as a reboot, upsetting people who wanted to transfer their rbygsc mons, and the fact that a lot of the old fans were going through their "i'm too cool for pokemon" phase

but they're pretty much the most significant games in the franchise

The move split was much more significant than Abilities, Natures or Double Battles. Abilities made some already-useful Pokemon like Tyranitar amazing; the move split caused many more to be at the very least viable.

There's still the issue of the other starters, the deep sea gorilla and whatever the fuck Sceptile is. There's a bunch of other things peppered about that people can't get, but I'm not going and digging. Not to mention, while it's possible, getting something from 3rd gen to current gen is damn tough, especially if their fourth gen game is diamond or pearl with that 24 hour transfer wait time. So, it's not impossible, but easy current gen access to all the 3rd gen mons would be great.

It was one of the first generations with "neverending" postgame content. Even in GSC, which had Kanto, was practically empty once you beat Red, and if you played Crystal you had a small Battle Tower. Hoenn on the other hand, had contests, a larger battle tower, secret bases, and if you go further, a trainer tower and the Battle Frontier.

It also implemented a lot of features that didn't bore me, like actual geography beyond the same grass, tree, ledge, and mountain assortments, double battles, abilities, etc.

The storyline is awful? It's a Pokemon game, what do you expect?

And I want it remade because of all those features listed, like actually decent contests and secret bases, could actually work with the 3DS's Wifi capabilities to bring us some really cool shit.

The region was good, I personally never minded the water and didn't realize people had a problem with it until I came here.
The music is good, I never even noticed the trumpets. It's not like trumpet music is bad anyway.
The story wasn't that bad, the villains weren't that bad.
And a hint of nostalgia. They weren't even my first games, but they are over 10 years old now.
On the other hand:
The rivals were actually not that great, admittedly.
It was difficult to find out where to go at some points. Even in subsequent playthoughs I've had to look up what to do.

People who were 10 when RSE came out are in college now. They hate DPPT because they stopped being kids around the time it came out. It's the same reason many dislike Hoenn. The whole gen war thing is pointless. Gen 3 was actually better than Gen 2 and is only liked because of nostalgia. The generation you started puberty is the gen you hate, Hoennbabbies actually played RBY and GSC but were little kids, and everyone is now overly critical of handheld kids games.

You call it theme, I call it fucking lazy design. R/S was a massive failure. You can have a tropical island "theme" without the need for 16 water routes. FRLG added water routes to the game, it didn't have them to begin with.

Gen 3 also felt like a completely brand new adventure after the first 2. It was like rediscovering my love of pokemon before I'd even lost it.

I really don't think that makes you superior, and I never went through that phase either. It's just more that I think people go through growing up and rejecting certain "childish" things and not realizing how much it sticks with them.
Ok this is kinda related, kinda off topic, but look at some cartoons. Everyone loved shit like Dexter's Lab and stuff from around then. Few liked stuff afterwards but now stuff like Adventure Time is popular, though a lot in between wasn't really enjoyed by "our generation". Hope that analogy makes sense cause I am dead tired.

People who've started off with Hoenn have grown up and now they're the majority in many internet communities. Don't take this as "hurr durr if u liek hoenn that means u grew up with it! :^)" because I like Hoenn too, but that's why it's more loved now.

A couple years ago, Hoenn wasn't near as loved as it is now, and going back farther than that, before /vp/ even existed, almost everyone agreed that Johto was the best. And I'm sure in a few more years, we'll see people hailing DPPT as the best games.

In the most basic sense, sure. However, I find it very difficult to play the older games since the mechanics are constantly being improved and new things get added.

As for story, they're all shit. I prefer B/W since the story actually extended to the end of the game. Ending with beating the antagonist instead of the Champion was a neat twist.

I couldn't stand HGSS and Gen 2 was my favorite generation at the time. They just completely wrecked the atmosphere that G/S originally had. Although the GB Sounds item was a really nice touch, I hope any future remakes (at least the Hoenn ones) include it.

R/S/E gen wasn't as good as it should have been, but it was definitely a good entry into the series. Hidden bases, double battles, Battle Frontier, Deoxys, RUNNING SHOES, DIFFERENT BIKES, Slateport, Altaria and many other things make it worthwhile. Sure it had some bullshit like dropping the day/night cycle (still baffles me why it wasn't included) and the amount of surfing but it wasn't as bad as some people make it out to be. Not even the trumpets.

I began with gen 1 as an elimentary kid with red version and were the best years of my life without realizing it at the time( not to mention the pokemon cards which even furthered my love for pokemon), all the way through gen 2 which was just as badass. But there was just something about ruby and sapphire that completely won me over, maybe it was the trumpets or the movie heroes or how u could transfer your pokemon to colosseum and XD and watch them rape shit with badass effects on the gamecube whatever the case I will always remember Hoenn and will always hold a special place in my memories

They are playable but you just have to remember how things worked before the split.

Special in Gen 1 served as Sp. Atk and Sp. Def combined, they weren't separate until Gen 2

The physical/special split in Gen 4 was where moves were recategorized for their damage
Before that moves used Attack/Defense or SpAtk/SpDef depending on what type they were, etc Fire Punch being a special attack because it was fire type
After the split it was each individual move instead of type so for example Fire Punch became a physical attack for being a punch

The Special stat was basically the Sp. Attack and Sp. Defense stat rolled up into one.

The physical/special split in Gen 4 refers to the fact that prior to that, moves were classified as physical or special depending on their type (e.g. water moves were all special, fighting moves were all physical). After Gen 4, moves were classified as physical or special individually, meaning that you could have physical water moves and special fighting moves.

People like it what else is there to say? I personally didn't like it much only played through it once with swampert and gardevior as my team. The pokemon were good, but the graphics looked bland to me. I never messed with the bases much, so I can't really say one way or the other. The Battle Frontier for me was basically Tower and Factory, everything else just felt gimmicky and boring. The Regis theme is still the best theme in any game though IMO.

PROS:
Most Pokémon introduced were pretty solid design wise.

Soundtrack was well composed and enjoyable.

Towns were very pleasant and did a great job invoking Hoenn’s natural theme by showing how each area merged with nature. (Slateport used the ocean for a ship port, Lavaridge used the nearby volcano for the hot springs, Forrtree built it’s houses in the trees, Pacifidlodge floted on wooden rafts, Sootopolis was built in a crater left over from an underground volcano ect.)

Abilities were an awesome idea that gave each Pokémon a little extra flare and promoted a little more strategy.

EV’s allowed customization for Pokémon and permitted the use of different strategies and play styles. (Even if the initial act of EV training was tedious as all hell.)

The over world was very colorful and lively with little things added in such as flowers dancing in the wind, puddles that showed your reflection as well as the clouds in the sky, and weather now being visible outside of battle.

10/10 land routes that were large and invoked a sense of adventure.

Diverse locations that ranged from volcanoes to deserts, and just a lot of cool places to explore like the abandoned ship, meteor falls, and the Regi caves.

Practically nonexistent rival.

The evil teams were uninteresting and just really dumb all around, even for Pokémon.

The lack of the Physical/special split.

Water routes, despite often being made out to be worse than they actually are, were bland, monotonous, and no fun to travel through.

Gym leaders were forgettable

Ugly Pokémon sprites .

Awful sound font that really brought down plenty of otherwise very enjoyable compositions.

Overall, Hoenn for me is a very love/hate relationship, whereas the things I liked I fucking loved, while the things I hate still stand out as some of the worst design choices in the series. And even then a lot of my pros were either my personal opinion or ideas that were carried down into future generations anyway. Despite its flaws though, I still consider gen 3 my personal favorite and is still the one I enjoy playing through the most. Does that mean I consider them the best in the series? No. But I’m a firm believer that you can love something while also acknowledging its flaws.
