I don't really see the problem OP. Both Ground and Flying are pretty ambiguous types in terms of characteristics.

Ground-type in Gen I and II sometimes meant "having a prominent horn/spiky thing." See: Nidoking, Nidoqueen, Rhyhorn, Rhydon, Donphan, Piloswine.

Ground type implies they are also capable of digging and other subterranian stuff. I don't see how it's farfetched for something to be able to both fly and bury itself when needed, no different from Water/Ground.
