So I've never really gotten into competitive battling or anything, but I've been doing some random 3v3 the last few days and I'm leading with a protean Greninja in pretty much every match. He wrecks the shit out of just about anything I come across and he's earned more than a few OCVs.
What I want to ask you all is if Protean Greninja is considered a very strong pokemon or is everyone in 3v3 random free battles just super casuals who don't EV train or anything?
I love this little fucker but it almost feels like I'm cheating or something. What do you guys think?

It's good in 3v3 but it plays a different role.
I always feel like I'm cheating when I use Talonflame. I didn't like him but I needed something that could fly and someone sent it to me via wondertrade so I just stuck with it. It almost always take out 3 pokes.

it's a good pokemon but it's strength also happens to be it's weakness
beware of pokemon who have coverage and can survive a SE hit from it

Cool so I guess it's nothing really special then. I've been using him with M-Charizard Y and a bulky Excadrill and I think I've lost one match out of about 20 with that team. I think 3v3 free battles are just full of casuals like I mentioned before.
I think I'll go ahead and train up some more pokes so I can build a decent team or two for 6v6 battles. Shit's pretty fun.

I will never understand why Greninja is still so popular. Talonflame on the other hand, that thing is way too good.

on the other hand i still don't understand how sylveon is used at all.
i feel like vaporeon is better than it and all sylveon had going it over vaporeon is being fairy type. that's about it.

Greninja is a solid special attacker who will most likely place on smogon's OU for this gen.

Ultimately its biggest weakness is that it gets Protean, which in theory would make it really unpredictable and versatile, but then gets an absurdly shallow move pool to use with it. As a result, pretty much every Greninja can be expected to be packing Dark Pulse, Ice Beam and either Surf or Scald. Some also use Grass Knot, but either way, it makes it really easy to predict and punish.

Physical variants of Greninja are a little more wily. Both because physical Greninja aren't seen that often, and because its physical movepool is at slightly more diverse. At the very least, you can get some surprise revenge kills with this version by suddenly busting out a Shadow Sneak on something that expects to be faster.

Seriously happens every time I run into Genesect. The only people that use it are too stupid to do it properly instead of spamming u-turn.
