Gen 6 had strong theming. It was all about having fun with friends. What differentiated the gym leaders from previous games? It's that pokemon seemed more a fun pasttime for them. Hell, most of the gym leaders were working schlubs.
You set off with a group of friends, except for one who believes she's better than the rest of you(but won't admit it until the end), and everything is about relationships and strong bonds.
A war long ago where strong bonds turned awry create a weapon? Check.
A villain who is a mirror of your rival/friend in that he believes he's better than others, and has grown bitter because of his inability to have fun? Check.
A champion who is only incidentally such because she happens to be good at her hobby, which she likely only has because it is a shared interest with a good friend/love interest? Check.
Besides, there were tons of books and exposition about the war, AZ, and the legendary creatures. Gen 5's lore was fucking vomit-inducing. I am tired of all this fucking poke-worldbuilding that is just IN THE BEGINNING THIS POKEMON WAS GOD AND HE CREATED EVERYTHING MORE AND MORE POKEMON GODS LETS HAVE A POKEMON PANTHEON.
I was much more satisfied with gen 6's legendaries, the mystery behind them, and the fact that GF decided to focus their first massively online experience's themes on friendship and going on a journey together with others.
It's all about going online and making friends and having fun. The game is seriously telling you that if you're taking it so seriously, you're doing it wrong. Quit being a Serena/Lysandre.
