Exactly! The reason we are doing this, is because they refuse to add a separate localized subtitle track, which is exactly what we have done! Don't worry, they have their own subtitle track in these files as well.

They work hard on their subs, and it's a dick move to make releases which are basically just editing bullcrap with notepad.

Even if I'm not one for sub drama, and despite you giving credit, it's someone's else hard work and you should get their approval first. It's hard to support a group that doesn't do the proper thing. Either translate the whole episode yourself, or seek permission.

That's pathetic. It's perfectly fair to disagree with how PM subs the episodes, but it's absolutely wrong to wholesale steal their work. You want to have subs with all English names? Fine, but you should translate from scratch, instead of letting someone else do 99% of the work and benefitting from that work without permission.

We just make do, it's only for the in-the-moment sort of thing. It's not like they'll ever show up in more than 2-3 episodes anyways. It's only to know what character they're referring to in the episode, and since it's Kalos, I'm guessing most of them will have English names aside from the tourists, which we'll keep the Japanese name for since they're well... Tourists.

Can someone please explain to me why /vp/ has a huge stick up their ass over "stealing" when PM's subs themselves allow people to illegally watch a TV show over the internet? I'm pretty sure he didn't ask the anime producers for any sort of "permission" to do this subbing project.

But it IS a shoddy translation. English subs should be in English. The torrent notes also mention they changed weird ass sentences, like when TR says "This feels bad!" They have all the English Pokémon names at their disposal but refuse to use them.

He isn't passing it off as his own, he flat out says that their edited versions of PM's script, just like any other scrubber does:

You definitely don't speak for /a/, so don't imply that you do. CR edits are almost universally agreed to be mindless and require next to no effort. That's why they're released so shortly after the simulcast and HS. There are obvious exceptions like when the typesetting is dogshit and it needs to be reworked from the ground up (ex. Gatchaman Crowds, Kill la Kill), but more often than not if you're using HS or Commie, you're an idiot. The order of subbing quality is

>original translation
>heavy CR edits (reworked phrasing, typesetting)
>light CR edits (localizing names)
>Horrible Subs

Releasing the entire file, while not illegal or anything, is incredibly disrespectful to the people that put forth the time and effort into doing an original translation for free.

The polite thing to do would be to only release the .ass sub files, or register your files on nyaa as a red release.

All I'm saying is that its bit ridiculous to go off on a tangent about an edit of illegal subs, especially when its clearly spelled out as an edit of someone else's subs. Scrub projects are usually done by people who either don't have the time or the language proficiency to do complete subs on their own. Once again, as long as its made clear that this is just an edit of someone else's translation, then what's the problem?

The main point is their revenue isn't coming from the viewers of the anime supporting if financially, but from Nintendo/GF who are going to commission more episodes regardless of whether someone subs it or not. The only people watching pokemon subs are a small group of people who want to get their episodes a month early before the official english dub airs them anyway (or people who just really hate the english voices). It has no effect on the anime whatsoever.

The difference between this and HorribleSubs is that HorribleSubs has straight up admitted that they rip Crunchyroll's subs to piss them off and also so that people living in countries where Crunchyroll is not covered can see them. Also, they never change anything. They are straight rips

Other fansub groups rip their subs because they are lazy fucks but that's not a good thing. More and more subs aren't doing their own sub work anymore but that's a different subject

The point is, what they do and what you're doing are completely different

I just did it myself. And I like the fact that I pick up which pokemon is being talked about instantly.

It's kinda weird to hear satoshi and read ash etc. etc. for the character names though.

A few comments ago I said I really don't mind what they've done, it's a good thing to have variety; but we're talking about honor among thieves here, and if one doesn't honor the creation of one set of thieves than that person/group gets defecated on by the rest of the thieves.

How is this not the fault of the guys who hardsubbed in the first place?

It's like defending those awful human beings at Japanzai for watermarking their shit to hell and back because Mangafox steals them and makes money off of them.
They ruin the quality/availability of translated material for EVERYONE, instead of handling it like sensible adults and provide people who would otherwise use Mangafox an easier way of reading on THEIR site, thus giving them the ad rev. Mangafox was taking.

It's not the dark age of fansubbing anymore. People should act at least a little professionally, or if they don't want to, don't PRETEND to be professionals and make a huge deal out of this issue.

The best way to look at it is if PM doesn't wish to make 2 tracks (which is fine, that's their choice) and if if the show isn't being tweaked, (other than names, etc) then they could mention what the source is in the comments. I'm sure that PM wants to get Pokemon/Pocket Monsters to as many people as possible. A 'scrub' (or whatnot) also gets the show out there to a wider audience that may or may not care for what the original subber does.

If having PM with their take and FM with their take makes that happen, does that not help out the community as a whole? (Plus, for those who also prefer a dub can look forward to the dub not that long after these subs are released, based on the new schedule.)

I'm all for localization and making things more accessible for international audiences, but those dub scripts take it too far. A lot of JRPGs and anime dubs out there ride the fine line between super-dry translations and a full-fledged slang-and-pun-down-everyone's-fucking-throat fest. It tries so hard to be snappy and colorful but it just falls flat on its face. TPCi needs to move to a different production company. The New York dubbing scene isn't what it used to be, anyway.

As someone familiar with this issue on another board, I do find it rather sad. I see both sides on this issue and I would hope that both PM and FM can see what they bring to the table and how they can both benefit from each other. The worst that could happen if that PM goes back to hard subs and that will end up not only hurting their audience but also reflect badly on everyone involved on either side.

There are actual benefits to softsubs, such as easy patching of script errors and the ability to take screenshots without subtitles obstructing the picture, and perhaps most importantly that hardsubs eat up video bitrate that could be going towards better picture quality or lower filesize.

These are reasons soft subs SHOULD be standard in every release in the year 2013, and taking them away because someone is "misusing" their release despite giving full credit to the original work is just being disrespectful to your fanbase that won't TOUCH Farmer'sMarket's release.

Was it a dick move to take their subtitle files without giving them a heads up? Yes, but things on the internet WILL be pirated, and WILL be misused, licensing, copyright or DRM be damned.
Is this release hurting PM or their fanbase? No, it is not, it is providing an additional service to those who have an interest in the same product PM provides, but with a modification PM does not provide on their own.

At this point, situation is basically "OP releases edited subs without asking the original subbers, and they make it clear they don't approve of him doing this".

No, the one about softsubs, which was substantial. the "demand" for English names is just from a handful loud people that mostly popped up after XY started.

This is the issue I think PM mentioned with how some people prefer some things left in japanese, rendering it unfeasible to please every fan out there, and that's why they don't make a more localized track.
However, the pokemon names, move names and mechanics can be used as-is as there are official english translations for them, and that is enough of a reason to want localization in their subs for some people.
FM is accomodating that minority without any harm coming to PM.

The second option would only be there due to people being assravaged over not seeing the exact names they want in the subtitles, though. Those people would still rage about the second option because there'd be some name in there that wasn't handled the way they wanted it.

Meanwhile, the rest of us just watches the release that exists and accepts that sometimes we won't agree with the subber on how to spell or word a specific term. Just like with every other series.

Those aren't the same thing. In universe, Pokemon names are equivalent to the name of real world animals, so unless they're nicknamed there's no reason why they shouldn't be translated. If someone didn't translate "neko" or "kabutomushi" then most people would mock the subbers. So while yeah it's completely understandable to not change Satoshi to Ash, it's not the same as not translating Nyarth or Fokko.

He completely pleases people who want names of Pokemon, recurring characters from the dub and moves in English, as well as English names for derived names like "Citroid" and "Mussarie", as well as "We're blasting off again" instead of a straight translation, but Japanese names for characters of the day (even when this creates confusion when you have a Jessica and a Jessie in the same episode), direct translations of berry names, item names, the Team Rocket motto and certain game quotes, "get" instead of "catch", and no honorifics.

That's a pretty specific target fanbase that most likely consists of only him. Had PM done an alternate track with these specific changes, the people who wanted an alternate track in the first place would rage about lots of the choices on that list.

Also its needs to be reiterated even if they did do an alternate track, they would still have Japanese names of characters that haven't been revealed by the dub yet. I see their point either go all english dub terms or all Japanese terms like they've been doing for years. Mixing and matching gets confusing especially if you come back to watch these after the dub airs and are like 'thats not their name'

I'm not PM, I don't know what they're thinking of doing, if anything, but if they want to stop future releases from this guy, the only possible choices is to either ask him to stop (which they pretty much already have) or to prevent his access to the sub files by not releasing softsubs.

Considering they switched to softsubs half a year ago specifically because we requested it, I don't really want to risk them dropping that.

If they do not like FM's specific style, they can edit the subs to their own liking, or someone else can come along with an edited release that DO fit their taste, as long as PM does not prevent access by hardsubbing.
And for the people that DO like FM's edited release better than PMs (I'm not saying those people think the release is perfect, just "better" and "good enough to not bother editing it myself"), they save a bit of effort they otherwise would have to go through.

I'm more concerned that they'll stop releasing the subs at all. They've done it before, when streaming sites constantly streamed their releases.
