I started with Gen II, and whilst I do find a big chunk of my favourite mons come from it, I didn't actually use most of them back then (pic related is my favourite pokemon).
Gen quality-wise, I'd say -
VI > IV = III > II > V > I
There's pokemon I love and hate in every gen, but I feel like III (or maybe VI) had the best quantity-to-quality ratio. Gen I probably has the worst, but it's forgiveable considering the series was just starting.
I'd say gen II has the best and most memorable music, gen III has the best towns, gen IV has the best region and in-game progression as a whole, and gen V has the best story. Gen VI struck a balance with most things (except in-game progression, where it failed) and at least tried fixing a bunch of issues that've plagued the series for far too long (OP Dragons, breeding being a hassle, etc). I...don't know where I'm going with this.
Point is, every gen has some great aspects, and often falls flat in others. I think gen I gets a free pass for being the first quite often, and outside the actual Pokemon fanbase, it is vastly overrated. Still not that bad everything considered though.
