I actually went from XL to this, and I only have two issues from that switch. One, although it's nice to see games in their natural resolution, actually being able to see what's going on and not having to have pin-point precision on the touch screen is something I do miss. Two, the center plastic piece on the 2DS does feel cheap, and that's not a good feeling.
Other than that, these aren't bad. I managed to find a couple brand new in box for $75 through a classifieds ad. The "slope" design actually feels fine in your hands, and the L/R buttons can be hit from the bottom/side. Although it's a small detail, it is something that feels 100% natural compared to the L/Rs on 3DS.
I still don't understand the "can't fold them" argument. If you own a regular 3DS, sure, but if you own an XL I don't see it. An XL isn't going to fit in your pocket anyway, and if it does it's time for you to grow out of your JNCOs. Sure, portability might seem like an issue, but odds are wherever you are storing that XL the 2DS (with case) will fit too.
>but muh screens
You're an adult. This is 2013. If you want your screens to stay pristine, you should know how to do that. In case you don't, they make screen protectors and cases readily available to you.
It's a handheld for the entry-level, and is put at an entry-level (more or less) price. If you want the "full" system, you can bump up to the higher options. If you plan on getting those other options, then don't even bother looking at the 2DS.
