For example, Flint. He only had Infernape and Rapidash as his fire types. But his Steelix and Lopunny could set up Sunny Day to support them (and abuse it with Fire Punch/Fang) and Drifblim spread burns with Will-O-Wisp. They didn't share a type but they all had a common theme relating to his given speciality.
It made fights a lot more interesting.
