So I think I'm getting pic related for Christmas, I didn't pick it up when it was first released. I really liked the first PMD game and I absolutely loved Time/Darkness/Sky. How does this one stack up?

If you liked the other PMDs for gameplay and story, you will most likely be disappointed.

The main story is way, WAY too easy, and many of the new, interesting gameplay mechanics don't come into effect until you beat the game. Also unlike past games, there's almost no post-game to speak of.

The story itself is weaker and not as well paced as Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky. Some developments will seem awfully sudden.

However, I enjoyed it nonetheless and didn't regret the money I spent on it. The graphics are great, and building your own Paradise was pretty fun. It's just not nearly as good as Explorers of Sky, in my opinion.

Story's as gold as always, might not be as tear-breaking as Sky but it gets the job done. Gameplay is so-so, depends on who you asked.

The story and speed is quite slow, and it is much, much more easy than the previous games (aimed more at a younger general audience).

But it has the best music I've ever heard (and it's absolutely gorgeous; go listen to some sample tracks, it's my favorite OST of all time), and the visuals are gorgeous. Seriously, play it even if it's just for that. The story is more bright and kid-like, but it's quite sweet, so it's still worth it.

If you are expecting something like Sky, you'll be disappointed, but it's still a good game.

This is what I heard, that it wasn't as good as Time/Darkness/Sky, but I'm glad you still enjoyed it. I'd google around but for some reason most review sites hate the PMD series in general. Guess rogue-ish RPG games aren't well liked.

But I'm glad you guys liked it. I heard there's less starters to choose from though.

Yes, the starter selection really is pretty poor, and there isn't a quiz (which I personally liked, but I think most people prefer to just pick their own starter). There are only five to choose from.

Whenever there is a niche game there will be sites that just hate the game.

Even tho there are less characters to pick from the side characters are more meaningful. You will love that Emolga for sure.

This will probably come off as the weakest in the series then, but taking it from someone who didn't think either game was that great due to ropey and repetitive gameplay and the stories only being great by pokemon standards as opposed to flat out great, I actually thought it was the best out of them.

Any problems I had with the gameplay in Gates were all part of the main series aside from the 1 mission at a time rule, and the non-gameplay elements were just flat out better. I like graphics here better than X and Y and a much needed improvement over the graphics in Sky which were really dated even back then. The soundtrack is just as great if not better than Sky (the one thing the series has been really strong in overall) and, most controversially, the story is drastically better. I really don't see what people saw in the story in the last two games, especially Rescue Team. Even Sky's was plagued by a borderline pointless first third and weak characters that I never grew much attachment towards. Gates however had the best line up of characters any pokemon game has ever had by far and I found myself caring for pretty much all of them. They really feel like they're with you in your adventures as opposed to walking verbal tics that don't really do anything. The villains are also enjoyably despicable.

Am I the only one who found your partner in this game to be sort of annoying? He's too unrelentingly positive and righteous. No negative, balancing character traits to speak of.

I preferred him to the cardboard cut-out of a partner in the first game, and you could say that the second partner was the only one with any development, but it was really weak development and he just came across as really needy to me, which would have been fine if there were other important characters to distract from, but all we got was a bunch of living verbal tics in the form of the Wigglytuff guild.
