Who gives a fuck about storing Pokemon? What people care about is transfering their Pokemon.

And what the picture doesn't adress is that unlike any other previous transfer methods, the additional cost is not due to a technological necessity (like how you simply need a link cable to transfer data between GB/GBC/GBA systems), but only there is nickel & dime the consumer.
And yeah, you get a free trial or you can borrow someone else's Pokebank account, but that's beside the point - someone is getting dicked in the process and it sets a terrible example.

You can't transfer from DS to 3DS directly.

A guy in the last thread said that they could have just used SD cards, but every faggot would be complaining that you need to use an SD card if they did that.

So yes, the additional cost literally is due to technological necessity.

Even in the scenario of older games, the completely valid point of borrowing a friend's game and trial would be the same as people trying to spout how you could borrow a friend's DS to transfer Pokemon in Gen 5, but then you realize without that, you would've had to straight up buy another DS.

Protip: BW/BW2 aren't sending out magical Pokemon data waves with their wi-fi. They can be picked up by fucking anything, another DS, a router or my fucking cellphone. The transfer is one way anyways, there was virtually nothing stopping GF from a technological standpoint to allow transfers (not storage, just transfers) without the bank.

Again, the only costs were those necessary due to technological barriers. You needed a link cable because the old Gameboys couldn't connect otherwise. And when there was no barrier, like with the gen 3 to gen 4 transfer, they didn't suddenly require extra shit to make quick money.

Irrelevant. Pokebank is a one-way transfer anyways. Any 'data conversion' that might take place there could also be done on XY as the transfer is taking place.

Like for example, I don't think there is any other set of games out there that did anything similar to the gen 3 to gen 4 transfer on one DS.

That was using BW2's DSi enhancements and Dream Radar basically worked by "being" a DSiware title for the sake of communications.

On the technical side, it's pretty different from how something like an actual 3DS game would try to do the same.

No, this is plain wrong. All you need is the game card slot to be open. A physical copy would get in the way, that's the whole issue. They can't communicate wirelessly, true, but they can communicate through direct access of the DS game card. Which is exactly what's being done.

Even then, they could probably just do a quick swap thing, like switching discs in a CD-based game or like Banjo-Kazooie planned to do with Stop-N-Swap or whatever before a N64 revision changed how the RAM worked.

For gbc to gba connection it was done that way to allow them to rework pokemon's structure completely. IV's were 0 to 15 in gen 1 and 2 then became 0-31. EV worked completely differently. Doing a conversion with that would have been a nightmare so they blocked it and said fuck it reset.

It's all for the universality of it. Why else do you think they crammed what, seven languages? into the game? Because they want unity. You can use any region B/W/B2/W2 game communicate with poketransfer, regardless of the region of the 3DS. What they are doing is moving the "translation" process to the online servers, allowing you to have less data stored directly on the 3ds, either on the transfer app or the XY game cart/data.

What we NEED to be complaining about is why Poketransfer isn't working with ALL DS Pokemon games. There is no reason they couldn't have the app recognize the older DS games, which would only really need a seperate, but longer, data conversion program on the Poke Bank servers.

Not only would this appease those who skipped gen 5 (instead of punishing them), it would also allow for a quicker transition for those looking to give 4th gen move tutor moves to a pokemon who has NO NEED for a layover in the 5th gen, due to it not getting anything it needs in that gen, or simply move up Pokemon faster. SO MANY people would benefit from this. This would be the BIGGEST improvement to the system they could make.

Simple, they didn't bother creating backwards compatibility in their new games for old games they were phasing out. Pokebank is likely going to continue to be used for continuing generations beyond this one and Poketransporter was a quick method of allowing people to get their pokemon across without requiring a second console or anything.

They didn't want to bother with backward compatibility in their new games, and figured people would rather have a way of transferring without the need for two consoles, so they create pokebank/poketransfer and give everyone a 30 day trial because they know it'd be crap to force people to pay just to move their stuff, and beyond that 30 days it's not their concern anyway because the older gen games are being phased out
They then make their service cheaper than any previous except for gen 3 to 4 (as pointed out in the OP image) and people STILL find a way to complain.

They aren't aiming to continue to support games they're phasing out, tough shit.

DSi-enhancement is sort of a physical thing. It's why only some DS games were region locked. All of the region locked games had DSi-enhancement. That's like saying you can patch in IR to the D/P games and have them work with the Pokewalker.

Unless you can just send every Pokemon Owner the chip and translucent game case for it, you're not patching that part.

Transporter works by reading data off a Gen V game in the game slot.

If you were playing a digital copy of XY, then maybe, MAYBE it'd be as simple as reading the card data.

But the how the hell you going to do that if you're playing a physical copy of XY?

Not to mention that this has nothing to do with a DS to 3DS transfer. When the games are running, they can't communicate with each other.

Transporter and Dream Radar have two "games" running on the same hardware at the same time. Trying to transfer from a DS to a 3DS is not this at all.

Both the DS and the 3DS can transmit and receive data wirelessly. We all know this, the system wouldn't be able to connect to the internet otherwise. No Wi-fi functionality could exist without this.

This data isn't "hidden", "protected" or "encrypted" in any way shape or form. Any Wi-fi capable device can freely access it. This isn't something anyone made up to discredid Nintendo, but merely how wireless networks work. Data is exchanged, devices can access it. Even if it was never "meant for them" or "directed at them". You can access everything your (3)DS transmit with pretty much anything, for example your PC or your smartphone.

Now you might argue that most devices simply wouldn't "know what to do" with that data because they "are different", but that is simply a gross misunderstanding of how software works. Nintendo's GTS server obviously know how to handle .pkm files and there has even been third party software (Pokecheck, Instacheck, Battle Analyzer, ...) that could "make sense of" the data your handhelds transmit, even though they run on fundamentally different systems.

Now let's apply this to the 3DS. Nintendo knows how to convert gen 5 Pokemon (.pkm) into gen 6 Pokemon (.pkx). That's what Pokebank does.

Pokebank runs on the 3DS. A software that is capable of converting .pkm files into .pkx files is capable of running on the 3DS.

While the gen 6 games themselves might not have this functionality yet it would easily be possible for Nintendo to add it with a patch.

I obviously don't expect to receive this added functionality free of charge and believe that the way Nintendo handled it is perfectly fine (it's fucking $5...), but the idea that it is technically impossible or even remotely complicated for a 3DS game to "make sense of" a .pkm file is absurd.

Which 5th gen's PokeTransfer already does. It works, they just didn't put it into PokeTransporter.

I know it's pretty easy to breed perfect IVs in Kalos but it still takes some time, enough time that trying new and strange team ideas is discouraged over building a smogon team.

4th to 5th was possible because of being the same console so it was no hassle. 5th to 6th is possible because they know people want to transfer from their last game to the next.

Just think about this simple thing: Why did Pokebank have to be a 3DS app, instead of an inherent feature in XY (like the Time Capsule in gen 2 or Pal Park in gen 4)? Why did we need a middle man when all actions relevant for transfers (that is, everything but storage) is happening locally on the 3DS?
Protip: The answer to that question is that there was no reason aside from jewing some more money out of consumers.

Why the fuck not? Its been a staple of games since gen 6(consoles, not the pokemon games) in most cases where it was technological possible. I cant see how difficult it is to try and preserve that when its quite easy to do so for the past 5 gens

What is every pokemon game in the past not of the same gen in the past that could transfer between gens.

The issue in the case of gen 2 and 3 was internal programing differences and not technological differences, this is quite different since nothing to the mechanics of the game was changed between gen 5 to gen 6

Data is data is data. The bits and bytes can be translated with a specialty "3rd" software. I am a java programmer. It wouldn't be too difficult to write a Java program that would If x then y that data from gen4 to gen6 pokemon file, and either RNG or autofill the blanks. And you would be right about the bits and bytes of data could be totally incompatible, if we were talking gen 2 to gen 6. That would be a LOT of holes to fill and translating to do, but even then it wouldn't be impossible, just tedious AS FUCK. It doesn't matter if the two software programs re incompatible. With the right Java script you could take your character from World of Warcraft and translate it to something equivalent as a Pokemon. Seriously.

I honestly don't know.

This issue could however be bypassed by simply having the gen 6 game act akin to a fake GTS for the gen 5 game. This isn't exactly the prettiest solution, but it would work.

-You insert your gen 5 game into the 3DS and start Poke Transfer
-Poke Transfer takes your gen 5 Pokemon and stores them in your online boxes
-You can then transfer the Pokemon from these online boxes using Pokemon Bank

Now, given these FACTS, there is no reason to put the transfers behind a paywall. Like, image for example this scenario:
PokeBank and PokeTransfer work about the same as they do now, but instead PokeTransfer gives you the choice to transfer to a regular PokeBank box or a temporary Transfer box. The number of Pokemon stored would be very limited, like maybe 30 or 10 or even just one at a time and they'd be deleted if not retrieved in an hour or so.
Then the PokeBank would be less of a forced paywall and instead you'd be paying for the additional convenienves of massive and secure transfers.

So to anyone in this thread spouting PokeBank was anything but a cheap money grab and absolutely necessary in its current implementation in any way: you're a retard.

If anything people who are annoyed by the lack of direct compatibility with gen IV games should be happy about pokebank because it looks like they could easily be setting up to ensure such a level of compatibility between future games so it won't happen again.

Are you all forgetting that Nintendo/Game Freak stressed that Pokebank would be compatible with future games? If they didn't create this all-encompassing program, they'd have to put a transfer mechanism into each and every game they create. they probably wanted to make it more convenient for us, by making one storage app that doubles as transfer for everything we buy from now on.

Not to mention if the successor to the 3DS ever arrives, Pokebank could communicate with the next storage app, likely through the Internet. The new app would have an option to link to the old Pokebank, possibly through whatever account system Pokebank has. I know I'm thinking really far ahead with this, but it would probably save a lot of trouble in the long run.

Formats are not irrelevant, but data can be converted between formats.

Convert your .doc file into a Paint file (your PC is perfectly capable of doing this, there is no magical technical barrier preventing it) and open it up in Paint. It works just fine.

Not necessarily. The way trades work is determined by the GTS server used, not by the games involved in the trade.

Take popular fake GTS software like Pokecheck or Pokegts for example. Using them is nothing like normal trades.

And use it to convert from one to the other, usually monodirectionally. Why one way? because of data inconsistencies. You can figure out how to put your Larn build into the body of a Mewtwo, yes. But back again? No. Why? Because you had to delete some of the data that is in a character file in Larn that isn't in Pokemon. Pokemon don't have every data value, and some need to be translated, and others need to be made the fuck up with a new roll of the dice. But just because we had to lose your Charisma stat, which is the only one that would not translate well, doesn't mean we cant turn your Wisdom stat into a nice equivalent in Special Defense.

Fucking headaches to program, and it would never transfer back cleanly, but all this is possible because, say it with me,

Why would any of you care? There's a 30 day free trial when you first get it right? That gives people especially /vp/ browsers more than enough time to get all of the unobtainable Pokemon from previous generations in to X and Y. Once you've transferred all of your Pokemon there's no reason to use Pokebank anymore.

The program has its own architecture that will at one point likely not always be advanced enough for future games down the line if nintendo ever plans to make more changes to the mechanics like back in gen 2 to 3. Theres also nothing stopping them from allowing you to move your box to the next ds console when it comes out by using the internet and having a a sort of 7th, or possibly 8th gen game if they decide to make multiple gens on the same console again acquire those mons.

Hell, if not, theres an sd card for a reason, you can just move the damn ds cart to the next console. Have the console have integrated memory to hold app and in this case a new bank that would take out pokemons from the old bank in the sd card. Because seriously, other than another damn control nub(or graphical power, but thats a given) what the fuck else are they going to do to make the next console better?

It isn't done, but it is technically possible.

Nintendo however chose to walk the path of least resistance and simply emulate a DS instead of making any 3DS games able to convert DS data.

This is probably a good idea since it is a very "clean" solution, but the fact that it would be technically possible for a 3DS game to convert DS data still holds true.

on-disc dlc =/= dlc it's quite different
on-disc dlc is when you block off something /already in the game/ that's just not allowed to be accessed until you pay for it. regular dlc is extra features that you pay for to get more of an experience out of the game after it has been out already; that is what dream radar and pokebank are.

except pokebank, unlike almost all paid-for dlc, is free for a solid month after you download it, and has every single feature unlocked for that time.

An issue is still an issue, but theres big difference between not being able to take a shower because the shower is clogged and dying because one has pancreatic cancer thats uncurable.
