Does the blatant misuse of "evolution" irk anyone else, or is it isolated to me? It's really more of a mutation.

Obviously "evolve" sounds better than "mutate," but let's be honest here - most pokemon are freaks anyway.

Mutation is a type of evolution. Pokemon don't mutate, they just go through life cycles

That's pretty wrong. Mutation can LEAD to evolution, but it is not evolution in of itself. A species evolves when a certain sampling of a population expressing one or more unique genotypes becomes isolated enough such that their offspring diverge in genetic markers from their original species. A mutation can just as easily lead to non-viable offspring, infertility, or may not be passed down at all.

That is the real misuse more than anything. It is more of a metamorphosis than anything. Some end up crossing kingdoms or phyla, though, in whatever direction they please. I would still call it a metamorphosis, though. Even for the things that are based on objects rather than living things.

The bigger issue is why only a few Pokemon evolve by friendship in the games as opposed to the anime where everything evolves by friendship.

It's kind of fucked up considering it's message about bonds and friendship.

Why does anything evolve by stones when others in the same element could be said to be doing the same thing? (gaining power in that element) As for other stones, what is the difference between the leaf stone and sun stone when both can be said to make plants grow. (assuming power of the sun for sun stone, as it also evolves Helioptile, which turns solar power to electric energy) Why do any pokes need an item when their evos already seem like a more mature version of the other? Why do they need to be traded? That should counter the thing entirely, but the game says it improves it. What sense does that make? All of this junk is for the sake of the game, to make it diverse. There is no reason for any of it to exist and should happen of it's own accord.
