If you have Firmware 4.5 or earlier there are all sorts of hacks being developed for the 3DS and a couple flashcards which are really just clones of Gateway3DS. Of course, this requires models made in 2012 or ealier, as from the Animal Crossing model on, it's shipped with 5.0+. Now official firmware is up to 7.x.
It was a hack involving the legacy DS name entry system, which for some reason they had run in kernel mode which allowed for an overflow exploit. Nintendo patched it, and pretty much unless you search for an old unit that no one has played pokemon on, you're SOL.
