Gen 1 Normal was Gen 4-5 Dragon.
It wasn't bad in Gen 1 at all. It was near-unresisted besides rock types, and all the rock types besides Golem were pretty shitty. Steel didn't exist and gengar was the only normal type.

I actually love Delphox (and I don't like Braixen that much, shock). I actually picked Froakie since I thought everyone was going to pick Fennekin, got to the first gym and discovered that EVERYONE hated Delphox, so I started over to pick the starter whose design I liked better.

Competitively, it's not very good in OU. It would be solid in UU, except that Victini exists and is basically a better version of it. Despite that, it'll still be a good pokemon for UU, and for RU where it will most likely end up.

Basically any rock type and most water types, especially ones that resist flying like Rotom-W.
Tyranitar is a commonly used example. +2 U-turn only does 65.5 - 77.9% off a life orb.

Same with any set-up sweeper. Which is why you immediately switch to your counter.

Mandibuzz has been a pretty good counter. Can wall while Talonflame kills itself, or can OHKO with Foul Play if they Swords Dance.

Three weaknesses to offensive types nobody ever uses is better than only two weaknesses, both carried on every single team.
It all doesn't mean much when the point system never accounted for abilities or viability of certain items like balloon. And then the "best typing" fairy/steel went on two Pokemon with fuckall defenses.

Also, Brave Bird recoil is proportional to damage dealt so you aren't killing yourself any quicker than if you were getting a OHKO on any other base ~90 hp pokemon.

Resistance to Ice and Rock is nice as well as Dragon immunity but that's about it. It's a good defensive typing but definitely not the best.
