Kanto: Laid the basis for the rest of the series... but not really that great on its own merits.
Johto: Kind of an incremental step. Nothing that special. Pretty decent Pokemon, though.
Hoenn: Biggest jump in game mechanics. Established a lot of what we take for granted today.
Sinnoh: Best music, and honestly, I really liked the Pokemon in this generation.
Unova: Best region. Yes, I really do think so. Very diverse, and had the most "character" of any region. Also best storyline, but really, that's not saying much.
Kalos: Best graphics obviously, and a big step in the modernization of the series.

Hoenn: only played it once, quickly on an emulator, and didn't really like it. I'll try it again someday I guess.
Sinnoh: i'm replaying it right now and not having as much fun as I remember. Plus, Giratina just Struggled itself to death while I tried to catch it so fuck that guy.
Unova: barely remember the game at all but the story sticks out a bit more than the others, N was a pretty likeable character.
Kalos: best autism. I never thought I would spend so much time breeding for IVs or shinies.
