Before the series began Serena and Ash went to Professor Oak's Summer camp. Serena got lost in the woods and hurt her leg, and Ash happened to find her and helped her back to the camp.
Years later, Ash arrives in Kalos and immediately gets into an incident involving a Garchomp going on a rampage in Paris. Serena sees him on TV and decides to go find him, eventually meeting up with him in Santalune, where they start travelling together.
