no sorry IT works like that, i personally i know a guy who wasn't good at math, now he works in a space engineering program. I can make different of examples like this one. "Natural talent" is an excuse.

I don't deny that there are some kind of advantages nature gives to us, just like being tall, have a good ear for music, etc... But they are all "generic". Being tall doesn't means that you will be good at basket. Mind it. The only things that makes a difference is the effort.

There are no specific talents for something, Mozart himself was hardcorely trained by his father to be a good musician, he was not born with music talent. Maybe he was just a very smart kid (that is the "generic" advantage i was talking about). Otherwise it doesn't makes sense at all, it will postulate an illogical metaphysical entity that carries memories of a former existence. Or maybe a genetic memory, totally incoherent with what we know about adaptation, fitness and natural selection (how can a music talent helps me to adapt to natural environment? how can a gene can spread if its related ability has an high aleatory chance to not be expressed at all?)

He was born in the right time, at the right place, taught by the right people. In modern 21st century, that doesn't happen. You can't just work at a craft and expect to do that your whole life. Also, music and sports is a terrible comparison, because you can't judge what a good piece of music is, what a good composer is. That's subjective. In sports, you can see if the person is fit for sports. You can see if he has the talent.

Hell, if "hard work" were all it took to be good at anything, why do people who don't study at all do better on tests than people who study for hours and hours and hours on the same topic that they both have equal passion for?

Also this doesn't answer at my question in real. You said that his body is perfect for swimming because he is a swimmer. He is not born fish. Yes he has something different from us, he started is training since he was very young. This means that he had all his life to build his skills. To postulate a "natural ability" is totally unnecessary.

No, no I can't. A friend of mine swam all the way into college on a D1 team and everything. He's trained ever since he was a little kid, but he'd never beat Phelps in a race.

I experienced this in quite a few of my senior level courses. I think the most dramatic example was when I literally attended every single class and office hour, reviewed every single lecture note before and after class, read the book, did all the homework problems by myself, went over the solutions, etc. etc. and I would still do worse on a test than someone who crammed it all in 2 hours before and copied off other people for the homework.

It felt miserable at first, but hey that's life. There's always going to be someone better than you at something you love no matter how hard you may work at it.

I'm sorry, but it's pretty obvious not everyone can grow up to be an NBA player. Some are just better than others, and it's not always because some just worked harder their whole lives. There are hundreds, if not thousands of division one college players that have been training their whole lives to play basketball, yet only a few will be able to make it at the next level. It's not pure chance that some players make the NBA and some don't. Some people are just more skilled than others.
