Mine was a voltorb, OP - same story.

I have since caught 3 shiny Zubats and one shiny Hoppip.

I've got you beat, I think. My first shiny was a Quagsire in the D/P safari zone. Absolutely nothing you can do there except hope that it doesn't run the first chance it gets. It ran.

Since then I've found a Grimer in B/W2 and a Hippopotas in X/Y, so it's fine I guess.
