How would one become become a gym leader (besides inheriting it a la Falkner/Flannery)?

You organize your own location for a gym, then register your gym with your region's Pokemon League organization. An inspector will visit to judge whether or not your gym passes and becomes official.

On a side note, if you "take over" a gym do you have to maintain the type? Or are you free to change the gym to your liking?

Becoming a gym leader could work as end game content. Imagine doing whatever it is you do in the end game, but at the same time receiving challenges. Perhaps becoming one would require beating one of the current leaders, being offered the spot and then choosing your type after which you could receive challenges on whatever device is in the game. Perhaps you could even customize your gym.

I always liked the idea of the post game having a big tournament called the "champions conference" where you have to battle each and every champion and former champion (meaning battling the protag of every other game + the region champions) to see who is the champion of the world.

Would make sense that to be a gym leader you'd have to join up as his/her underling and battle the trainer before he gets to the leader. Then I guess when the leader retires, the highest of the underlings get to be the gym leader?
