I live in a town where there is a significant amount of Scientologists.
They really aren't paying for being 'saved'.
It's more that they have to pay for self-help literature and seminars and stuff to do more self-help psychology stuff.
So it's more about paying therapy fees. Less about buying salvation or progress(though it is often likened to that anyways because of how much crap you have to go through).
Scientology is more or less buddhist or hindu mysticism wrapped up in modern self-help bullshit than it is a religion where people seek to be 'saved' such as in Christianity, certain sects of Hinduism, or Buddhism.
