Look at me, I'm Cloyster if Cloyster was a big pile of shit. I have worse typing, abysmal speed, shit options for abilities (dat dere hail team OP), and shit bag SpAtk.

I'm so glad GameFreak made me a big pile of dog shit instead of adding something unique for me to capitalize on, like my buddy Cloyster.

Both are Ice type.
Both carry a base 180 def stat (Avalugg is 184).

They're pretty similar in terns of what the fuck they should be switching in/out on. Cloyster just happens to have the extra versatility to magic himself into a sweeper.

Coat can be a risky play when someone knows what Avalugg can learn, but it can be a game winner if that was their last special user, and the rest of your mons are ready for physical, or those two could have been the last two left. Honestly, a lot of special sweepers would die to a strong avalanche or EQ assuming Avalugg has sturdy at full HP. Using a Weakness Policy further strengthens the damage more than likely.

So yeah, Mirror Coat is simply a choice/situational. Dudes a beast against "Muh hyper offense" like Bravest bird and so on.

Actually, Cloyster can take on the role of being either a wall or a sweeper; most people just tend to use it as Shell Smash sweeper since it's more effective and ice typing isn't always the best defensive type.
On topic: I agree with OP that Cloyster is a better Pokemon in terms of stats, but I don't think Avalugg isn't terribad. Access to Recover, Toxic, and Gyro Ball + Avalanche + low speed stat combination it pretty good in my opinion. In all honesty: it depends on your team.

The game is predictable to a fault. There are two types of strategies:

- shit that works
- shit that will never work

The predictability comes from single pokemon. 99% of pokemon only have two or less distinctly different ways to be played. That's fucking amazingly predictable.

I'll give you an example on a general level:
>grass type pokemon goes out
>this thing will know either Leech Seed or Spore or both
>use process of elimination

You've just successfully predicted what any grass type pokemon will attempt to do within it's first two turns.

Here comes a more general example:
>Klefki goes out
>he has Twave
>If he uses Swagger, he's a Foul Play swag fag
>if he uses Light Screen/Reflect, he's dual screens

Fucking predicted the shit out of him. I'll tell you what, name any fucking pokmeon in this game and I will tell you exactly what they're going to do in a battle.

+Nature Max invest after autotomize is 480 speed

Beats scarfers up to 96 base speed.
Beats anything with 168 or less base speed that isn't scarfed.

Also has the ability to go special with ghost/steel stabs, mixed with ghost or steel and fight, or physical with a combination of ghost, steel and fight, all backed by deoxys level attack that's doubled.

Because they can't embrace his coffee table-ness and they got walled by him with his humongous 184 defense and 95 hp and access to recover.

Him and Cryo actually make surprisingly good walls. Both have access to Spin and Recover and can usually cover each other's lower stat.

The most threatening is actually Lum Berry + Bullet/Dynamic/Payback/Stone Edge.
Use it as a Lead an you're guaranteed to take out at least one pokemon as long as your opponent isn't leading with Talonflame

Raw stats matter more than type.
Lugia has one of the shittiest types in the game but it's the mixed physical wall by virtue of its stats alone.
Avalugg is the same but only on the physical side.

You actually have a point here. Especially in ubers where those weaknesses are downright awful and only the ground immunity is really useful.
However don't forget that Lugia has Multiscale and high speed other than incredible mixed bulk.

To say that Avalugg is a "physical Lugia" is quite an overstatement.
Still I agree that Avalugg doesn't really care about SE physical hits unless they're retardedly powerful like Mega Luke's Close Combat, but then again almost nothing can wall that monster.
