For those of you who nickname your 'mons, how do you go about it? I almost always name them after constellations because I'm a space nerd. For example, I named this Cloyster I just caught Pyxis, which is a southern constellation for a mariner's compass.

Either after my close friends or names I come up with on the spot. If it's a Pokémon I won't use, I name it after a pun like On Ricks or Steel Licks . Only outlier is my Flygon, which I named Hella, now I can't call it anything else.

Tyrantrum has those jaws again, so there's that, but I'd also think about one of the Godzilla kaijus, maybe. I go with East+West animation and folklore themes very often: I have a physical crobat i named Dead Parents (batman) a special nasty plot one named Amethyst Staraptor named Nightwing My Weaviles are named Black Joker(s-CRY-ed) Female Gyarados is Amphitrite, Male is Neptune Roserade is Tuxedo Mask (finally have enough characters to fit) Dodrio is Asura Magmortar is Red Volcano I'm going to name Aegislash and Escavalier after Monster Hunter Sword-and-Shields and Lances, respectively Lucario has the Egyptian thing going on so I named them both Jehuty to also tie into Zone of the Enders

Amethyst and Black Joker are cool, too.

I'm pretty guilty for giving them really cutesy names, naming them after characters from shows or books I like, or after a word I randomly turn to in a dictionary. A lot of them are named after foods too. Some examples are a female Dragalge named Gumdrop, a Xerneas named Pellucid, a Whimsicott named Absinthe, and a Mr. Mime named Dr. Rockso. I'm one of those lame fucks that nicknames every Pokemon, and I don't like battling people because a lot of the names I give kinda suck.

I found a shiny female Gyarados by chance, and she was Brave and quick tempered. Of course I named her Tampon, at least until I remembered the red river monster from Courage the Cowardly dog that sang opera. She was quickly renamed Carmen.

I named my shiny male sylveon Oberon. I thought it was pretty witty

I name 'em after references that range from the obvious (Donatello the Blastoise and Knack the Chesnaught) to the very obscure (Thunderchild the Hydreigon and Honest John the Garchomp) I also name certain pokemon after songs and albums I really like (Wolf the Scrafty and Glawio the Glaceon)

One particular nickname I'm proud of is for my Aegislash: Amoracchius. Which translates to "The Sword of Love," in Latin. It's from the Dresden Files series. I was going to name my Weavile Mab, after the Winter Queen of Air and Darkness, but the first 5 IVed one that popped out was male.

I go for naming themes, usually. For Y I'm using French Names, and for my replay of HeartGold I'm using names of Philosophers. I swear by the site "Behind the Name," it's so handy for Pokemon.

I mostly only nickname shinies. I give them their Japanese names, just to make them stick out a bit more. But I did nickname my Dedenne "Chikapu" because seriously, it's basically Pikachu, and my Talonflame "Pyrogrine", because /vp/ suggested it, it sounds really cool, and Talonflame sounds stupid.
