Difference being that the Gen V protag canon catches their legendary, then Gen II protag doesn't. Don't know about Gen VI yet.

Or you could run or faint it right away and everyone goes on their merry way.

With the BW/XY legendaries, running or fainting them just makes them get back up for super special plot reasons.

In everything before DPPt as well. However, I guess casuals happened, or maybe battling the legendaries became part of the plot, so they felt like making them easier to catch for little kids.
Mantyke and Chatot are prime examples of FUCK YOU, though.
