General team building tips?

I haven't played metagame since R/S and I keep failing. I'm tired of having to rebreed and rework only to have it fail.

First I went for type coverage and discovered I didn't have enough defensively. Then I tried the defensive route and would end up stalling without enough firepower to win a match.

How do you make teams that work well together?
