The hordes all come at a much lower level than the rest of the Pokemon in the area, so I'm guessing they assumed that if you were allowed to send out all your Pokemon against them you'd just ruin their shit instantly.

Obviously a contrivance to keep the game balanced.

I mean we could do this all day, how can certain Pokemon be hiding in grass that's only as tall as you? How do random battles even occur in caves, does Onix just pop out of the ground? Video games don't make logical sense by necessity.

Engine limitations obviously. Nothing really related to the lore, it's not about a weird rule or something.

Also it would be unethical. Think about it: a wild animal attacks you, and you have other wild animals capable of beating it. But all of them together would basically kill the wild animal. In this game you never kill anything, because you're supposed to love Pokemon.

I'd say it's more honor code of the trainers or whatever. There are set rules, like you can only use one at a time against wild Pokemon or trainers that use one at a time, and you can only carry 6 with you at a time.

half of them have various mind-reading powers, why not just carry an Alakazam or a Hypno, and put the other trainers to sleep?
Hell, you likely wouldn't even need to say it out loud to give yourself away, just 'think-speak' it to you 'mon.
