I did this with Fire Red, didn't use items for all of the 4 battles, however had to against Blue.
Also the Elite 4 in X and Y is more challenging than the champion

What's your point?
No matter how good you are (unless you are using over level 80+ pokemon) you would have to use a potion at one point in one of those games

Dude... I went into the E4 with a team literally 20 levels under their Pokes.
HGSS was the easiest Pokemon game I've ever played. You fight trainers with Pokes in the single digits of level like halfway into the game.
With XY, normal progression leaves you OVERlevelled instead of underleveled, but it still somehow is more of a challenge.

X/Y is a challenge if you don't turn on EXP share.

I didn't say it was hard at all. The ones I didn't point out were the ones I used potions for and the reason why there was a bracket for gen 4 was because I had to use potions for Platinum.

I don't think my pokemon ever fainted in HGSS but if I were to recommend an alternative to HGSS try out SacredGold/StormSilver. They are hacks made off HGSS that level the trainers/gyms/wildpokemon/e4 as it should and can have all pokemon up to Gen4's pokedex obtainable.
