Main issue with the Gen 5 starters is they all have shit movepools. Serperior has something of an excuse since it's a "snake" pokemon, and those ALWAYS get fucked over. The others though, the main issue is that they just make them far too focused in move types. Look at something like Starmie, now ask yourself why the flying fuck that thing gets Thunderbolt, Dazzling Gleam, and other powerful coverage moves. If they can justify odd shit like that, they could certainly find someway to justify the starters actually getting better moves.
Only thing we can really hope for is that the starters get given better treatment like Sceptile got. He got a wide array of coverage moves since his intro in Gen 3. Just compare the list of moves he can learn now, to the moves he had back then. He had NOTHING but Grass attacks and a couple of coverage moves in things like Crunch and Thunderpunch.
