So I completely skipped over HG/SS & BW/BW2 and just didn't buy Platinum. Should I buy the actual games to rectify this our would emulating be suitable for the experience? I don't really care about trading between them or doing the Bank yet, so I'd assume emulation is fine.

There's basically no difference between B and W besides two areas and a few exclusives.

And whatever you do OP, DON'T skip the sequels.
They're not as good as the originals in terms of the story but better at pretty much everything else.

Ruby and Sapphire were trash. Emerald was alright, but every game following Emerald except for Diamond/Pearl was honestly better.

The only real good thing about Hoenn were their legendaries.

I will lower myself to your level of autism for the sake of establishing this once and for all: N's name has nothing to do with the dragon he commands, for each one represents truth and ideals respectively. *Personally* I prefer Black's storyline because N is seeking and ideal world where pokemon aren't used as tools, hence Zekrom siding with him. Also, Zekrom IMO looks much more intimidating and that adds to the climax of the story, you having to face this chosen hero against a powerful dark dragon, and a majestic-looking (not fearsome, like Zekrom) Reshiram appearing to aid you.
