Natures lower one stat as well as increasing one. Modest lowers Attack, which you won't be using (and in fact you want lower attack, for confusion and foul play damage). Mild reduces your defence. Like it or not, you WILL be hit by physical attacks, and this WILL make a difference.

With a hindering nature(Mild), the defense at level 50 would be 109. Neutral nature would have it at 122. Not that big of a difference

You get the nature that you want for your offspring every single time
Example: Female Wailord (holding everstone)-Modest
Male Skitty (not holding anything)-Timid
The hatched skitty will always have modest no matter what if the Modest Wailord is holding the everstone.
