Gen VI meshes well with each other because unlike the other starters the three share a distinct theme.

With that said, Gen V does have a theme. They're all historical warriors (European royal warrior, Japanese samurai, Chinese warlord). It just isn't as clear.

Wasn't there a game where a thief, a knight, and a wizard were cursed to share the same body? The gameplay involved swapping between the three to clear puzzles. One could be a Pokemon trainer in much the same situation.

I find it so hard to rank trios as a whole when half of the generations I only like one or two of the starters...

I mean, Gen 1 and 6 were both awesome but every other generation was basically:

Gen 2: Totodile = awesome, Chikorita is alright with Cyndaquil trailing a bit behind
Gen 3: Ehh, Treecko and Mudkip are alright, screw the chicken though.
Gen 4: I freaking love Turtwig, favorite fully evolved starter, the other two can go die (especially Chimchar as I freaking hate monkeys).
Gen 5: Snivy's alright, screw the other two

Seeing as how this "erases" the character's personality that you choose to play as until a replay, I'd kinda only want it if Game Freak is set on keeping the "You're now a Pokemon in the Pokemon world!" theme.

Honestly, I'd love a story where you simply play as one of the three characters and still have that character's unique dialogue included in the story. The "silent, it's your own character" persona was still pretty static in the story direction anyway. (A nice bonus would be that we could see our chosen character's thoughts, though.)

I just think we've been transformed enough, and would really like to see these three in a game featuring them. It'd be a refreshing change of pace.

But one thing it did right was made some good Pokemon, Talonflame is the first regional bird I like and this is the first time I enjoy all 3 starters
