Save a few exceptions, mewtwo and maybe arceus, but GF really dropped the ball with that one. I know they care very little about the "lore" but a pokemon god was really over the top.

As for Arceus, he's only said to be the creator of the Sinnoh region. It's entirely possible Kyurem-Whole was as powerful, and might've created Unova.

I believe some should be unique and some just really rare. Mewtwo should be, since he was created not born, along with any of the "god" pokemon. Every other one is just a super rare pokemon.

well the original mewtwo was a clone. rocket or other scientists could have taken the dna or process and just replicate it. Genesect are basically mechanized fossil pokemon so their as rare any fossil. Lugia's are probably somewhat mortal so they need to reproduce to continue but are still very rare.
I think only the dragongods of sinnoh and unova are one instance, mew as well.

In canon none of those three caught mewtwo any more than they caught a bellsprout or got all the shiny event Pokemon.

The game remains the same whether you catch or defeat the Pokemon, it's entirely possible, and likely canon, that Red defeated Mewtwo, allowing Gold/Lyra to catch or defeat it.
The Kalos one may or may not be a different clone entirely.

Arceus has always been said to be the creator of reality itself, with Sinnoh just being one creation. The Original Dragon has also never been remotely implied to have created Unova. It only served as the companion of the human brothers who founded civilization there.

It was also said that one of the brothers sought truth, and the other sought ideals. The Original Dragon didn't want to choose sides, so it split itself into two, the two Pokemon being Kyurem and Reshiram.

And somehow during the process, a 3rd dragon was made. A balance dragon. That Pokemon was Kyurem. The original dragon doesn't exist anymore, it can only become one again when all 3 stones for Reshiram, Kyurem, and Zekrom end up in the same place.

The DVD is out of print and goes for a lot. I'd prefer a fansub since the home release of the movie in America was a cropped 4:3 from the movies original 16:9

My head-canon is that the Pokémon we know as Arceus is just one of the "thousand hands" that the true Arceus has. It's a form of avatar with a tiny fragment of the true Arceus' power. Therefore, it's not a stretch to imagine that all of the legends that created something (Groudon/Kyogre/Rayquaza, the Lake Trio, maybe even the Unova dragons with their whole Truth and Ideals thing; you get the idea) are all just one of its many avatars/"hands".

There's nothing that says there are more Genies, Darkrai, or Regigigas either.

I don't doubt the possibility of them being unique, I'm questioning why they seem to be a definite whereas some of those others are just possibilities.

Hell the games even went out of their way to have you catching the Pokemon you already "saw" rather than just giving you new ones and ignoring the old, like Emerald or Crystal.

I'd create a new category in "however many were created is how many will exist" or something like that
Put Mewtwo, Genesect, the Regi trio, and I guess the beasts(?) in there

I see your point, but we're lacking evidence here. My main argument is that if Deoxys is not special at all, there should have been several ones amking it to earth. Good point on the BW trio. The original list was made for Gen IV with certainty, I guess we should have a thread about gen 5 and 6 some day.

For the additonal category, it kinda does not answer much, IMO. As far as the games go, we have very strong evidence for Mewtwo being unique. If we count the Red Genesect, we have strong evidence against Genesect being unique. It would be a neat solution for the Regis or the beasts and I think the birds, though.

Red Genesect is an anime creation. There is only one, non-shiny Genesect as far as the games are concerned. N killed the project before any more could be made.

Arceus and the creation trio are explicitly stated to possess powers that makes the definiton of uniqueness not applicable to them. Thus, if we want we can instantly put them in the "there infinitely many" tier, but that'd basically be the same as the list did: They need their own tier anyway.

In Japan, there are mythical Pokemon and Legendary Pokemon.
Mythical Pokemon like Mew, Mew clones, Latitwins, beasts, birds, Shaymin, Deoxys, and regis are not unique. They are only extremely rare.

Legendary mons include Ho-Oh, Reshiram, Zekrom, Arceus, Kyurem, etc.

Probably missed a bunch of legends, but this is how I understand it anyway.

My biggest peeve is that the Regi's appeared in Unova, and were implied to have been there for a long time. The Lake trio in Sinnoh is fine, because they could have migrated. Similar to the Hoenn legends in HG/SS, but there's no way to explain a cave containing a slumbered Regi Trio AND fucking Regigigas without implying that the Hoenn set aren't the only ones.

Well, Palkia travels through time like everyone else does, but doesn't travel through space the same way. Since space and time are intertwined, the results are kinda the same though.
Palkia could just wrap space around it in a way that it appears twice in 3-dimensional space. It is even explicitly stated to "transport itself to faraway places or even other dimensions.", so using higher dimensions, this becomes easy.
Imagine (or just take) a piece of paper. To you, it is basically 2-dimensional. This is how our world is to Palkia. Now, if you drew a dot on that paper, it could look all around at all other things you draw on the paper but would not see anything not on the paper. Now, roll up the paper and stick a needle right through the rolled-up paper. It pierces the paper twice. And our dot on the paper would thus see two 2d-needles. One is in front of it, the other is behind. But looking at it from a higher dimension you see that it is really only one needle.
That's basically the same trick Palkia can do with 2d space: It can appear at two places and still be one Palkia. It wouldn't need to create matter, it would just need to fold up space so that its body "intersects" twice with the world.

Giratina can instantly travel to the distortion world, it even has a move to do so.
IMO, a lot of legendary Pokémon cannot be captured against their will. Thus, they happen to be captured, they always kinda choose to do so.
However, even then there is no canon capturing of Palkia anyway afair.

The 'legendaries' you catch are merely a fragment of the true one's power, allowing for multiple legendaries to exist without breaking canon. The fragments are merely a test of strength, as the true legendaries see you as a worthy trainer. The real ones could just laugh and crush the Poké Ball you send out to catch it. That's also why legendaries can be knocked out by other Pokémon.

That anon is implying that this is the case for every Protag.

By this logic, there are as many Legendaries, as there are that show up the REGIONAL Dex's.

This actually makes sense if you think about it, excluding the few Pokemon that are retconned in later games. I.E = Hilda/Hilbert didn't catch Kyerem, because it was wild for Ghetsis to control in B2/W2. Outside of things like that, it makes sense.

Just that each Game Protag could have completed their respective Regional Dex. This means capturing all legendaries in said region too, so if Mewtwo has shown up in three separate regional Dex's, it can be implied that they are all different, and were all captured.

Not too far off to imply this, considering ever game involves you completing the Dex to upgrade your Trainer Card. It's one of the consistent Goals in Pokemon, so it makes sense that every Protag bestowed with a Pokedex completed their Regional Dex.

The Mewtwo in the Unknown Dungeon in HGSS is implying that red never caught it, considering it's still in the same fucking place. Maybe all pokemon really do come from mew. Maybe they all ARE mew, just transforming into forms it thinks of. So none are unique
