Long story short:
-People were using services like Swapnote to trade pokemon and stuff for child porn.
-Nintendo didn't had control of it by moderation and they silently shut it down without noticing anyone only after they did it.
-Since they feared they could use Flipnote 3D the same way, they limbo'd the international launch (and they silently seem to have cancelled it), and limited the sharing capabilities for japanese users.
-People flung shit, Nintendo never responded, and they also cut down the drawing and sharing capabilities on 3DS Miiverse for this very same reason.
The comparison comes actually from the fact that they COULD make a silent cancelling, but they're citing the thing without the context.
You should really be worried, if they did it the way they did with Swapnote, though. Axing something like this silently, will raise a lot of backlash from people.
