The first gen put all this stuff in place, which is its contribution. It's not really fair to include gen 1 in a contest of contributions like this, because it included every game mechanic, which makes it the immediate winner. But if you take those away from it and attribute them to the series as a whole, it can only have the least because then Gen 1 has no way to add new content - it came first. It had no way of improving itself.
